My son found a week old kitten tonight that was a bit dehydrated but otherwise seemed fine if not hungry. No fleas but very dirty. The mother was no were to be found and the kitten was by the side of the road. After cleaning her up and giving here some kitten formula which she drink with a real passion, I was cleaning her rear when I noticed very tiny maggots in her rectum. Of course the vet is closed so that is not an option. I cleaned out as many as I could and have done so a few more times but I am worried there may still be more inside her. She has yet to have a bowel movement even with all the wiping and clean I have done to here rectum. Does anyone have any further suggestion on what I can do for this kitten?

We have called all the shelter and rescue places and no one wants to take this kitten. The advise they have given is to leave it and walk away. I am so mad and worried at the same time.

Thanks

Sounds like she has worms. Almost all kittens have worms, so a vet should be able to handle that tomorrow - In the meantime you just have to feed it, and stimulate it to go potty, and keep it warm. I hope you don't leave it and walk away...

No Vacancy...One on the way!
ya sure its not worms?

Take it to the vet asap (make sure shes not anywhere near your other cats if you have some) and have the kitten checked out and dewormed.

your a good person for taking in the kitten. maybe once her health is cleared some shelter or someone will take it in.

good luck

Sounds like worms to me too.I think tape worms look like little pieces of rice.SO, it may be worms instead of maggots.

yep, its tapeworm, not maggots. She needs to be dewormed by a vet if they think she is otherwise healthy enough.

Hiya and welcome to Tcs

I personally would not take any chances with the kitten, kittens born in the wild are prone to fly-strike(flys laying eggs on them) if their mother is not around to clean them.
It can only take afew hours between the eggs being layed and turning into larvae and the larvae can eat an animal alive from inside out.The warmer the environment the faster they develop.

You may be able to check if they are maggots here
http://www.deathonline.net/decomposi...life_cycle.htm

I would get her to a vets as soon as you can she may need anti-biotics.
You could make a nurses appointment which is a lot cheaper than a vet appointment, and if the nurse thinks the vet should see her then she will tell you.

Oops!! Sorry about the link,Its the right one now : )

Thanks everyone. Well I am lucky to have my studio as a seperate building behind my house and that is where I am keeping her. We have a cat now in our house as well as 2 dogs and I didn't want them exposed to her without knowing if she is healthy or not.

I cleaned her bottom again and a few more came out. They are about the size of a grain of rice and have a tiny black head. Her belly is very round so I am hopping you are right and they are worms. Her rectum is also not as swollen and enflamed as it was at first. I plan on sneeking her to a vet in the morning.

Thanks again,
Pam

or did she find you
Well whoever, she is safe now and those people who said leave her,Well, They are inhuman in my eyes and shouldn't be working in rescue.

Good luck at the vets with her

Very funny....This is my biggest problem. We have too many pets now and can't keep her. Now just how am I supposed to not get attached to the little fur ball? Seriously, we can't keep her so I am also going to check with some rescue groups tomorrow. I wouldn't mind fostering her until she is weaned but that is all I can do.

Thanks again for all your responses. I can now go to sleep without worring that she is going to be eaten alive during the night. She is sleeping now all warm and secure in my studio away from all our pets.

I thought I was full to the brim and had no room for anymore and i've got five cats of my own, plus one domestic foster that would like to be a feral,a feral mum and her two kittens and I only have a two bedroom apt/flat

Believe me you will find room if you really need to

Bless you for taking in the baby and please tell your son that I consider him to be an Animal Hero, just like on Animal Planet
You have taught him well, and he did not just walk away (unlike those uncaring animal "rescuers" )
I am sending {{{prayers and vibes}}} that you can find a foster home for the baby - maybe someone at the vet's will step up to the plate (I gave my grandson a kitten, and when his dad was at the vet's getting her vaccinated, there was a tiny kitten that had been illegally abandoned on the vet's doorstep, and well - my grandson now has "Snowy" and "Midnight"
). Please keep us posted! And welcome to TCS
Susan

Just to update everyone since you all have been so kind.

After spending all morning making a ton of calls to every agency, shelter and rescue, I found one woman who although she can't take in any more kittens did arrange for me to take little fur ball to her vet and will pay for all treatments. What a wonderful woman. She was patient and listened to my plees for help and offered wonderful care advice. I have an appointment tomorrow morning at her vet to have hairball taken care of. Darn it looks like I went and named her! It looks like I will be fostering her in my studio untill I can find her a home. Below is a picture of her. Cute ha?

Is she doing ok for the rest?

She is taking the bottle well and doing ok otherwise. I'll let you all know what the vet says tomorrow. Well I have to go back out to the studio to give her somemore TLC.

I forgot to mention how steamed I was with most of the people I talked to this morning on the phone. The worse was the man at the local ASPCA. He actually yeld at me for taking the kitten and told me by law no one can take it in. What's up with that?!! I explained that the mother was dead and it was on a very busy road. He said the law is the law and that cats are allowed to roam free and I had no right to remove this kitten from where I found it. Sorry, it justs makes me mad that this man is working for an animal rights agency and has this attitude.

Thanks again everyone.

Congrats to you and your son for taking in this little baby! She's such a cute little "hairball"! LOL...
Hmm, The ASPCA guy sounds like an ass. I'm sorry, but I couldn't just walk by a poor, sick little kitten, law or no law. Thank you for taking her!!

My mistake. It wasn't the ASPCA but the local town shelter. I am soooooooo sorry for blaming the wrong person. The county SPCA did give me a list of people to call but also said I should have left it and if I bring it to them they will but it to sleep.

Oh goodness, I know it is so hard. They are just inundated with kittens and they've seen so much they're just hardened at this point probably. She looks very sweet (and tiny!) and actually this is part of the solution, rather than part of the problem. Ok, so maybe she wouldn't have survived and that wouldn't be their problem then, but it she had, it would be one more cat having litter after litter of kittens. Thank you for fostering her. You'll do great, and you may even find her forever home among one of your friends, co-workers, or relatives!
