I have a 16 month old female cat that has had problems ever with her left ear since I found her when she was two week old. She has a lot of wax and brown discharge it it almost all the time. She has been treated for ear mites and the last time she went to the vet he said that was all cleared up but her left ear still has the discharge.
Also yesterday I noticed that she has red spots on her right ear flap in between the skin that kind of looks like blood. It's not very noticable unless you hold a light to it. She also has some small bumps on her ear where the red spots are at.
Does anyone know what this could be?

According to my cat care book, if you see goo or something that looks like coffee grounds, your cat probably has ear mites or an ear infection.

She has been treated for ear mites before. The last time I took her to the vet he said she had infection but no ear mites. She was treated and it cleared up but it keeps coming back. What could cause a recurring infection if it's not ear mites?

If ear mites have been ruled out, a yeast infection is probably causing the problem. I am surprised that your vet has not told you this. It can be treated and it probably should be--by a different vet.

My cat gets recurring yeast infections in her ears no matter what I try to do to them to keep them clean. (We think it's triggered by allergies since she's especially susceptible in spring and fall when the weather's changing.) My doctor flushes them out, then puts in this gooey, thick, yellowish gel-like medicine. It causes her to be a little off kilter for a few days, but within a week, the infection is totally cleared up and she's good as new!

If I'm reading her last visit checklist right, the medicine is BNT ear medicine.
