My three kitties poo so many times in a day i feel like a poo shoveller as thats all i seem to be doing lol

just wondered how much a 4-6mnth old kitten should be going to the toilet

they r being fed 3-4times/day except for one who is fed a little more as he is looking a bit thin

Have they been wormed? And what are you feeding them? The food might not agree with them. My kittens usually only poop once a day which I think is supposed to be normal. They pooped more often when they were sick with coccidia or when the antibiotics for their URIs were upsetting their intestines. I think Lily is about 5 months now and Eve is around 3.5.

issue is i live in Pakistan so i dont have such a great choice of cat food etc so i have to give em stuff i can find consistantly here

Ginger is over a year old and poops once every 1-2 days, and Ferris, who is just 4 months old, poops 2-5 times a day. He eats a LOT, and I'm weaning him off the low quality food he was given in foster care. As he eats more of the good stuff, I find he is needing to go less.

A good deal comes with how you feed them.. When they're eating a little bit throughout the day, it comes out a little bit at a time, since it all takes time to go through the digestive track. If you feed at set intervals, they should have a regular bowel movement 1-3 times a day (mine generally do 1, sometimes 2).

My boy trouble goes sometimes up to 2 times a day,and sometimes every other day. And he is on the same eating routine.. And Momma goes ALOT! lol
Sometimes soo Much from morning litter cleaning to nightly litter cleaning, that she pooes outside the box..and covers it with litter.. outside the box.. LOL! What a mess we have then!

Gizmo 'goes' once or twice a day. It's not consistent. She eats more now that the weather is cooling down.

Since kittens are babies, they will most likely poop just after they eat. If they eat four times a day, they'll poo four times a day...there is probably notbing abnormal about this in a young cat. Their insides are small!

Sadie and Dexter are 6 years old.
Once a day.
I watch their frequency closely.
It is a good health barometer.

OMG, I have extremely poopy kittens then! I would say they go at least 3 times a day! I noticed, however, that the issue of age has come up quite a bit on this thread. Does that mean cats poop less as they get older? If that's the case, I can't WAIT.

Kittens will poo more since they are babies. Babies eat, then go. So do kittens. The kittens, like babies, will do this less as they mature.

I'd put the kittens directly into the litterbox after each meal. That is the recommended treatment in the cat care books I've got.

My one has had a bout of diarrhea when he came home to us. He is now almost 5 months. He had a fecal test done and the labs found nothing. Presumably he just had a sensitive tummy. After putting a tablespoon of pumpkin in his diet, he firmed up completely, but he still goes 3-4 times a day >_<

fefe76,

I have the same problem.Bella ( 3yrs and Thunder 7months)  poop every 5 minutes ! I feel like I should stand and  guard the damn box and just wait for it to happen.

I have called the vet to see why they poop so much but I haven't got no call back. Could it be change in their food ? 9 Lives to the cheap stuff ? I'm going back to 9 Lives dry food.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
This post was started in 2006, and I don't think fefe76 has been back since.

But a cat should have a bowel movement about once a day. If they go more frequently than that, there is something wrong with the food and/or their GI system.

Dejolane, I'm pretty sure you've been told elsewhere that 9lives dry food is not a very good food. If you've moved to something even cheaper than that, the problem is DEFINITELY the food. If you purchase your food at the supermarket, perhaps you can afford Purina Cat Chow Natural? It's the best of bad options.

If you were having a bowel movement more than once a day - especially if it were like 3 - 5 times a day, you'd be changing what you eat or you'd be off to a doctor. Your kitties can't tell you their tummies ache. :(

When Bella -my kitten- was younger, she had up to three or four poops a day. She's now six months old (just turned today) and has one poop a day, occasionally two.

I found this to be true when I had the feral kittens from the yard and their mom.

They were lean green pooping machines when they learned how to use the litter box. Mom used it a lot to since she'd been cleaning up after the kittens and producing their food.

After they got a bit older they slowed up. The one I kept went from going...geez, 4 ish times a day to about once. He went to the vet, everything checked out fine...he was just a growing kitten who ate and pooped a lot.

Seriously, I never knew so much crap could come out of things the size of large hamsters.

Some people say you can give a cat Amodium AD for the poops. Has anyone tried this or is this just a myth ? I have to try to stop them from pooping so much !
