I sent this link to a couple of the girls at work yesterday. This morning, one called me up all excited that there were baboons at the watering hole

Wow, there's a herd of Cape Buffalo just hanging out there now. (Of all the animals in Africa, those are the ones that scare me the most. Especially the lone bulls. They call them Black Death or Black Nightmares because they are really that deadly.)

Oh CUTE! There's a little bunny with the buffalo!

That's interesting! I had no idea they were so deadly... I was noticing how fiesty they are when one wanders to close to another while they're munching on grass

Because my father had always dreamed of going to Africa, there were always a lot of books around about African wildlife - Robert Ruark, Ernest Hemmingway, Peter Hathaway-Capstick (he was a safari guide, or bwana (white hunter) with intimate knowledge of so much African wildlife). I guess Dad passed along his fascination with that continent's wildlife.

Cape Buffalo are the best equipped herbivore to defend themselves, or just get rid of whatever is pestering them. Their hooves have razor sharp edges, their horns can hook and penetrate, the boss or flat part of the horns can be used to pulverized, and they have enough strength in their back legs that a swift kick will disable whatever it connects with (and then they use the hooves and boss to finish the job). The skin around their vital areas (neck, back, especially) where the predators usually attack can be up to 1" thick, and they are quite adept at protecting the young and feeble in a herd. It is said that when a lion or pride is desperate enough to try to bring down a full grown buffalo, it's actually a pretty even match up. And Capstick said that he's seen the remains of people who have gone up against them and lost that would fit best in a small bucket.

But gosh they are fascinating animals - especially when you know just how dangerous they can be.

Wow .... from what I've seen on the cam, I knew Cape Buffalo were dangerous. But just them and no predators/humans around ... they're rather cute in a dangerous way ... There were a few cavorting in the water, like they were genuinely playing. However, I would never get in front of one ANY DAY! Yeah, they are so majestic ....

Me too!!!!

We've been watching since 8
Chad can't wait- he hasn't even seen the cam before tonight! My brother said when he watched it there was a ton of activity... he's also been leaving his computer on and falling asleep to it (with the volume turned down some, geeze!)

My husband Dave thinks I am about crazy for watching the thing so much!
I keep giving him updates: "OH, there are monkeys." "Oh cool - an owl!"
He has actually gotten up from the living room to come and see on a few occasions!!

If I see something, I'll hop over here and post it. This is gonna be fun!

Like a pajama party on safari!
