ok, I need some opinions here. I'm competing in the Jr. Miss scholarship program next year (it's sort of like a pageant, but based more on grades and stuff), and for my talent I'm going to dance. Problem: my mom hates the song my instructor and I picked out. She thinks it's too controversial and not peppy enough. It's "Come Together" by the Beatles. I don't really know what the song means...do any of you have any opinions on the song? thank you much

Movin' on up!
It, certainly, isn't "peppy" and I've never been sure what it means. I don't think that I'd call it controversial.

My parents are hard-core Pentecostals and I was allowed to buy that album, in junior high. Mom previewed every record and didn't allow anything that even HINTED at sex or drugs.

I'd say, do what you think is right for you. Good luck.

Personally, I love the song
I say DO IT!! Seriously, you need to chose a song that you can give your best to, thats what matters right?? If you can dance your best to it, use it

I say as long as YOU like it, that's the main thing...you need something you are comfortable dancing to! Good luck!

Well, I caved. I talked to an old dance instructor of mine who's been involved with Jr. Miss for about 10 years since she was in it, and she said the same as Mom...try something more upbeat. So, I'm looking for a new song. Right now I'm leaning towards this great song by India Arie called Video. It's all about loving yourself for who you are...very Jr. Miss-ish (and I want world peace!):tounge2:

Ooh, I think the India.Arie song will do perfectly if you can't do the Beatles. I love both songs.

(Posting the lyrics because I love 'em, lol):

"Video"

[Verse 1]
Sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t
Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I wonâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t
Depend of how the wind blows I might even paint my toes
It really just depends on whatever feels good in my soul

[Chorus]
Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m not the average girl from your video
And I ainâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally,
Because I am a queen

I not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m wearing I will always be
India.Arie

[Verse 2]
When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me
Every freckle on my face is where itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s suppose to be
And I know my creator didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t make no mistakes on me
My feet, my thighs, my Lips, my eyes, Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m loving what I see

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
Am I less of a lady if I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t where panty hose
My momma said a lady ainâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t what she wears but what she knows…
But Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve drawn the conclusion, itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s all an illusion
Confusionâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s the name of the game
A misconception, a vast deception,
Something got to change

Now donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t be offended this is all my opinion
Ainâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t nothing that Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m saying law
This is a true confession
Of a life learned lesson
I was sent here to share with y'all
So get in when you fit in
Go on and shine
Clear your mind
Nowâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s the time
Put your salt on the shelf
Go on and love yourself
‘Cause everythingâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s gonna be alright

[Chorus]

[Out]
Keep your fancy drink, and your expensive minks
I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t need that to have a good time
Keep your expensive cars and your caviar
Allâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s I need is my guitar

Keep your crystal and your pistol
Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]d rather have a pretty piece of crystal
Donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t need you silicone, I prefer my own
What god gave me is just fine…

[Chorus]

I love the song Video. I think India.Arie is so talented. I think she deserved all the Grammys, instead of Alicia Keys. good choice in songs for the Jr. Miss pageant, it's such a great message. Good luck!

Yeah, Alicia Keys is talented, but I think India.Arie should have got them too. I just think (from what I've heard -- only a few songs from each) that India's music has more meaning to it.

I love Alicia Keys as well as India, though Video is really the only song of hers that I know. I'll only be able to perform the first 90 seconds probably, which cuts off right after the 2nd verse. It's a shame I can't get the whole song out there, but I figure it will get the message across. thanks guys!

I love that song and it has such a good message too. That song is definitely better than the first song by the Beatles. Good luck!
