I have a senior cat who has a litter box problem for nearly a year now. I have taken him to the vet and they say it is not medical. He does go in his box. But sometimes he goes right next to it.

I have tried everything I can think of, as well as several suggestions. I have gradually changed his litter, gotten a different box, cleaned, tried reintroducing him to the box. Nothing seems to help.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I feeling quite desperate.

Have you tried getting a second box?
Some cats don't like to do their business in the same place.

Is he declawed? Often declawed cats will have problems using litter as it bothers their feet. Have you tried a different kind of litter?

As the above poster said, also some cats don't like using the same box for pee and poo. If you have one cat you should have two boxes, two cats - three boxes.

At least get a big piece of rubber or stiff plastic around the box so if he does miss, it'll be easier to clean it up - old people become disoriented etc., but we still take care of them even if it means getting a bit messy, so you might not have a lot of options.

Is your new box longer than the old one? Many people use rubbermaid-type under the bed storage boxes because they are longer and the cat is more likely to stay in the box even if they are digging around a lot.

Also, you may want to try something with lower sides. It's possible your kitty has a touch of arthritis and is having trouble getting into or out of the box sometimes. Having a piece of linoleum scrap or puppy training pads in front of the box will help contain the mess.
