Whenever Tyran goes potty she does this thing where she will cover her poo or pee with litter. This is normal. Then she will scratch at anything nearby, like she's trying to cover it further with things around her. This includes the litter container, the litterbox (the outer edge), and especially the wall. She's beginning to leave marks where she constantly scratches at the wall after going to the bathroom.

Is there any way to stop this?

The scratching is getting to the point I want to pull my hair out. Sometime early this morning, before the sun was even up, I wake up to the sound of Tyran scratching away at the wall. There are noticable scratches on the wood and my grandmother is not happy about it. Just the sound of the scratching is enough to drive you crazy.

The cats live down in the basement with me (its kinda like a mini apartment, minus a stove and shower) and my grandmother only allows the cats to be upstairs when she is home. The litterbox must remain downstairs so putting it somewhere else, away from the wall is a no. Miki does not scratch. My friends who have cats have told me, its just their instinct to cover thier 'poo' but Tyran is trying to use the wall or the side of the litterbox, or anything nearby. The scratching is loud and quite annoying and it keeps me awake.

Is there absolutly anything I can do?

Your cat has scent glands in the pads of his feet that he is depositing on nearby walls, etc. to mark the territory as his. I provide a scratching post RIGHT BY the litter box which Persi uses when he is done in his litter box or sometime before but always in conjuction with the litter box. It works for us!!!

The scent gland thing, is that for female cats too? (Tyran is a she) I'll look into getting a scratching post.
