Why does my cat lick envelopes and pictures?

My cat is addicted to licking envelope glue and the finish off of pictures? I constantly catch him in our mail pile or perched beside the refrigerator licking pictures. Does anyone else have a cat that does this? It really doesn't bother me, I just think it's very strange.

Ok, this is a really strange post. I've never heard of this before. But don't let your cat do it ANYMORE. The glue could be harmful, I'm not sure. Wait for more expirenced members to respond. But I'd stop your cat from doing it anymore.

Actually it's not all that odd.

Cats like pictures and plastic bags among other things because they are often manufactured with animal products. Plastic bags often contain fish oil, and pictures contain a few different animal products that make them shiny or keep them looking good. Many household products also contain gelatin, which is long-boiled pig skin and such, and though it doesn't smell like animal to us it may to them.

As for the envelope glue, I don't know, but it is probably something similar.

It's certainly not cause for alarm, although I would keep the photos out of reach because there are other chemicals in there not good and also because cats have a tendency to start chewing on them.

The glue on envelopes is probably okay, as we know it's been approved for humans. I would doublecheck, but it's likely benign.

Good info! Maybe the envelopes are being licked because of the scent of the glue? They taste/smell strong, sort of minty...maybe it's because of that? I know catnip is part of the mint family and that's why cats like the smell of peppermint.
