I really hope it's just a fluke and that people aren't dumb enough to kill and mutilate stingrays as a revenge. That is the worst tribute anyone could pay to Steve Irwin

yea that is pretty sad i hope they dont do that

So NOT what Irwin would want!

And then there's the possibility that it's people in search of stingray souvenirs -- that, too, boggles the mind, and sad to say, I think it actually makes more sense, since those who would avenge his death if they could, would also know that it would not please Irwin. People in search of souvenirs, on the other hand, especially if they think they see some $$$ in it, won't be thinking of Steve.

I hope it turns out to be coincidence.

That is really sad.

That is just awful, and it just goes to show how ignorant some people are about animals and their intentions (as I recall that is what Steve Irwin was working on fixing with his shows).

It's awful that they would kill several innocent animals over what was most definately a freak accident as most people that get even stung by sting rays, it does little damage....and IF I recall correctly the last death from a Sting ray was in 1945 (I think that's what they said on the news).

People are the worst animals on earth, they are the most destructive, the most vicious and sometimes the most heartless (not all people, but as a whole).

how sad poor stingrays Steve Irwin would be devastated if he saw what those idiots are doing

I heard that it was a common practice for fisherman to amputate their tails to avoid being "barbed" in that area. I think it's the media trying to create a mountain out of a molehill. It's horrible that fishermen mutilate their catches....stingrays,sharks,whales,etc,but they do.

Exactly. I heard on the news that his death was one of like eight or some small number on record (caused by stingrays).

Being married to a professional fisherman (a boat captain) and a biologist, I can definitely say that not all fishermen mutilate their catches...I don't want all of them to get a bad rap based on the bad behavior of some.
However, back on the topic, this is a shame and in no way does it pay proper tribute to the great person and conservationist Steve was...he'd be so ashamed that this is happening!

That is terrible. I'm so saddened to hear that. Any Steve Irwin fan would know that he spent his entire life trying to save and help wildlife...he would never want anyone to harm them....

He worked for the conservation of all wildlife and he deliberately showcased animals that humans had vilified, crocodiles, snakes (particularly the poisonous ones) and even tarantulas. I know he wasn't bitten, but he said several times in interviews that any time he is bitten it isn't the animal's fault. That somehow in some way he made a mistake and that it was his fault.
