Hello,
My sister and her husband are going to adopt a cat or kitten soon and I want to give them a gift (either for them or for the new kitty.) They already bought a litterbox, food, toys, and dishes and I'm not sure what to get them! I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or can think of anything that would be especially useful/helpful for new cat owners?

How about a scratching post? Or a good brush or nail clippers? Interactive toys are lots of fun too. My sister and I exchange toys for our pets at Christmas.

Do they have a pet carrier yet? I've not got my kitten yet, but have been saving up bits'n'bobs myself! One thing I have got a lot of is different types of wet and dried food - in small packs. Maybe you could make up a starter kit with food, catnip, a blanket, etc?

How thoughtful of you! Try getting some nice treats for them, my boys do the kitty dance for these: http://shop.halopets.com/category.cf...ategory_ID=15&

They already got a carrier... I was helping them shop yesterday.
They didn't get a collar yet but I wasn't sure if they should get one now or wait until they get the cat in case the collar might turn out to be too big or too small...

A nice pot of catnip would be welcomed by most cats.

An interactive toy such as Da Bird would also be very good. But the best thing you can give a new cat is lots of affection!

Get 'em a cat tree! Or a window perch, if they haven't got room for a big cat tree

I like the catnip and scratching post idea too. Or you could just be unimaginative and get a gift certificate to a pet store.

Correct me if Im wrong but you havent mentioned them getting a BED yet right? Well the little kitty is gonna need somewhere warm and snuggly to rest and sleep in! There is an amazing variety of beds in every petstore you come accross in town. Even though my kitty has got a bed (which she rarely uses! She prefers to lie down somewhere flat and cold like the balconys tiled floor!!!
) I often feel like buying every single pretty bed ı see!!...Youll have lots to choose from all shapes and sizes...Plus a gift bed'll look quite "big and rich"!!!

I second the window perch....ALL kitties love looking at the window!
I see them for $19.99 at Target but $29.99 at PetSmart for the same darn thing, same brand too!

toys are always good, you can rotate them so you can't really have enough - especially if they are kittens! There's some links at TCS to online places so you can review and what seems good.

You can always just get a Petsmart or Petco gift card to be on the safe side. That is still v. thoughtful, and they can be selective about how to fill in the gaps of their needs.

Don't know what you want to spend, but a water fountain would be a good idea if they don't already have one.

You could also get some cat food or treat sample baskets quite inexpensively.
