Simba almost killed himself earlier this morning.

I know how you feel. I came home a few weeks ago to Pudge tentatively tiptoeing around the livingroom with a pork rind bag (thanks, bf) capped neatly over her head.

It'd been on her head for so long that there was about a tablespoon and a half of condensation in the bag from her breath. I am happy that her long fuzzy facial hair isnt any thicker than it is, or I probably would've come home to a dead cat.

What a frightening experience, Hope! I'm glad to hear Simba is okay.Could you stuff some towels or such behind the bookcase to prevent him from falling down there again?

Oh, Hope!! Glad Simba's OK, but you must be a nervous wreck! One can hope he's learned from his experience, but knowing cats, I wouldn't count on him staying down.

Hope...
I hate to say this but it may be time for that darn bookcase to find another home.

I am so glad that Simba is OK.

Hugs to both of you.

How scary Hope! Glad sweet Simba is OK - maybe he'll think twice before getting on the bookcase again.

Poor Simba! How frightened he must have been. I hope he learned his lesson about climbing bookcases. And poor you- so worried about your baby. Try to rest and relax today.

That's actually a really good idea. Anything that you could put there to fill or cover the gap behind the bookcase. Because let's face it, if a cat likes to be somewhere, they're going to continue to get up there regardless.

we have a bookcase which we locked to the wall using these bolt things, to prevet it falling on my kids, maybe you could find something similar?

Glad Simba is okay, sorry about your trauma.

Hope,

I'm glad Simba and you are ok. I've also had a panic attack or two when my bengals have gotten themsleves into a predicament. It doesn't help matters when you're half asleep too!

Well, he got up on top of the bookcase again last evening, and I firmly raised my voice and I said, "YOU GET DOWN FROM THERE, RIGHT NOW!" He jumped down before I'd even finished saying the word, "Now".

The space between the wall and the bookcase is now only about 2 fingers in width, so I don't see how he can fall down the back now. However, I still worry about it, especially when I'm at work.

You know I live in Southern California, and they suggest everyone bolt TV's, bookcases ect to the wall, because of Earthquakes. If we had a decent sized shaker, that thing would fall over, and probably destroy things. I really should look into bolting. I just don't know if I could do it myself.

If you can't do it yourself or don't know anyone to help you right offhand Hope, I can send Brian, and me too of course so you wouldn't be uncomfortable with him there to see if he can figure it out. Let's face it, you live like maybe 5 blocks away.
We'd be more than willing to chip in and help for the protection of you and Simba. And Brian's pretty handy. We could figure it out.

A friend of mine used L-brackets at the top of her cabinets, screwed them into the wall at the right height and pushed the cabinets back against them to seal the top and screwed the top piece down against the top of the cabinet so no kitties could fall down behind and at that height it would be invisible and provide you with the shaker protection.

Just PM me if you need us. We should be pretty free this week since we filmed Brian's short film this past weekend.

omg how scary!!! I'm so glad he's ok!! ** hugs **

A sad story.. a friend of mine on another cat board went to work one day and when she came home she found her little 2 month old kitten dead behind her dresser
lodged between the wall and the dresser. Apparently he somehow climbed or fell behind the dresser and hung himself somehow.

Just when you think you've 'cat proofed' your house as much as you can, there is always something else you wouldnt even think of that could happen.
