Hi. I'm new--this is my first post! I have a ? that I hope someone can help with.... My cat, short-hair domestic female, not "fixed" (yet--and I can't remember if one spays or neuters femaless...) is about a year or year and half old. She has a healthy appetite and clear eyes, no visual bm problems and is active and playful. Her gums and tongue are pink and her little teeth are sharp! However, for the past few weeks I've noticed that she is losing fur in a v-shaped strip down her back, starting with the wide end of the v (about 3/4" wide) at the base of her tail and coming to a semi-point about mid-spine. Around her neck area (nowhere else) she has little hard bumps that feel and look like scabs. Every once in awhile she'll nip herself and chew at her skin almost frantically. I don't find evidence of fleas or other parasites. I will take her to the vet as soon as I can but work schedule and vet's hours don't coincide often! Any ideas on what this might be? Oh, I have treated her with an OTC anti-fungal spray which seems to help if I do it 2x/day, every day (but she licks it off as soon as I spray it on). Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. TIA.

A whole host of problems can cause hairloss and itching. Does she get outside at all? Do you have other cats and are they affected? I'd say a trip to the vet is in order.

Yes, I do have 2 other cats. No, they're not affected. And no, I don't let my cats go outside. And yeah, the vet will be getting some of my money as soon as I can arrange it. : Thanks anyways.

It may be a fungal infection. My cat has been losing fur in patches on her head and ears. We took a culture a few weeks ago and the diagnosis was a fungal infection. I'm calling the vet today for medication suggestions . Read "There's a Fungus Among Us" later this evening for updates on the treatment and see if your cat's symptoms match Gizmo's.
But there are so many types of fungal infection, you will certainly have to have a vet determine what kind it is.
