I just gave him worming medicine from the vets yesterday. I took a sample in with me and he said it was fine but wanted to worm him just in case. His stool is still loose but i haven't noticed any blood in it today. This is the first day since i brought him home that there hasn't been any blood in it. Also he hasn't gone as much. I have been giving him a little bit of pumpkin to see if that would help firm things up. I gave him about a 1/4 of a teaspoon yesterday and today. Is this too much? too little? He is eating good and drinking good. Plus i know i'm giving him better food than he was getting at the dump he was in so that probably can explain the very loose stools too until him tummy adjusts. He will go in at 8 weeks for shots and an exam. Will he be tested for the feline leukemia then? How much is this test and what are the average costs of shots for kittens? I know what to expect with the dogs but not the kitten. How many rounds of shots? and what kind of tests? Thanks a bunch!

For the loose stool, continue on the same food you've been giving him, don't change it suddenly. If loose stool persists, try boiling a little boneless, skinless breast of chicken and some long-cooking white rice. Cool both and then blend (in a food processor or blender) into a thick paste. Serve kitty about a tablespoon of the chicken/rice mixture two to three times per day. You can also take out a little of the rice water (let it cook for about 15 minutes, then scoop about a quarter cup of the water off the top), let it cool and mix in with his normal canned food.

Testing for FeLuk at 8 weeks may or may not be effective as the test isn't always accurate in young kittens. Your vet may choose to test him then, but follow up with another test after he is 16 weeks old. I am not sure how things are priced where you are, but the nomal kitten vaccines (for Rhinotraceitis, Calici Virus and Panleukopenia) normally begin at age 6 weeks, with boosters every three weeks thereafter until 12 weeks old - the cost here in my area for these vaccines is about $35 including the exam.
