My kitten eats dry food and water but has been eating a crazy amount! He's about 7 weeks old and will eat 5 or 6 tablespoons (best guess without measuring) of dry food a day if I let him. He's started to get rather round and is getting diarrhea. Can anyone recommend a good amount of food to give him since he obviously can't moderate on his own?

First have him checked by a vet for any internal problems - like worms. What kind of food are you feeding? Poor quality food can give diarraha as well as worms.

Then give him small amounts of food at a time - 3 meals a day - don't let him free feed. Keep him on a schedule as he grows. When he's an adult he should be fed 2 times a day - set amount of food. Some cats will regulate on their own, others need to be controlled.

I have always free fed mine. So, I'm not sure if he is over eating or if he may have worms.I would get him into the Vet and have him checked for worms. Then discuss it with your Vet about his weight.

Free feed depends on the type of the kitten/size, etc. My rex kittens only got to free feed for a few months. Then they got regular timed meals. Rexes will get fat very quickly on free feeding.

Now if the cat is a larger Maine coon type, then you could free feed longer. I'm guessing the kitten has worms if he's eating that way and having the diarraha.

Well, we took him to the vet last night but I didnt' have a good stool sample. They decided just to give him the worm medication anyway. They also said to let him eat as much as he wants until he gets older.
