I have a female I adopted from the streets. When we got her last November she was about 7lbs, since then she has kept gaining weight to over 17lbs and still climbing, so we cut her canned food and she is eating dry food and drinking lots of water. But now I'm concerned that even though she has lost 2lbs in the past 2 weeks she is starting to get bald spots on her that we thought at first she was picking off, but now she has one on her head. She is declawed so its not that. Could these be related at all?

Angels to you for adopting!
Any weight loss that rapid is a lot....please take her to the vet if you can and get her thyroid checked out, and a complete blood panel. Sounds like an irregular thyroid which is very easily correctable at her age. And the bald spots are not coincidental...does indeed sound like a thyroid issue.

I rescued my little Saba from the wild - literally. She had spent the entire winter two years ago out in a rural area and made it through. She was only 10mos at the time as estimated by the vet...but she was a scrapper and determined to live...although emaciated. (Could you believe she was abonded as a kitten??!!) She hoarded food for the first month with me, and gained 3 lbs. On her tiny frame that was alot. Once she understood her new food source would be steady and she could be out of survival mode, she lost it and now settles in at a petite 4.5 lbs. So it could just be hoarding food but with that much - 10 lbs?? - get her checked.
Please update~!

Rapid weight loss in a cat is cause for real concern. The other thing is that dry food is much more fattening than wet food so that was probably one of the reasons she gained so much weight. A wet food diet is a far healthier diet for any cat.

Your cat really needs to see a vet. Aside from the above posters thyroid issues, losing that much weight so quickly could indicate liver malfunction as well.
