I found another Kit last nite, this time he was in a box on my doorstep...again he is all black. It is the wierdest thing i have ever seen in my life and again it is male. He is in much better shape than the others were. He looks about 5 weeks old and other than being a little skinny and skidish he looks ok. I gave him a round of wormer and some Kmr...he was up most of the night crying and meowing...im guessing from missing his mama and littermates. I dont know what to do if anymore show up... I CANT take anymore in... this will be the fourth cat we have all are under 6 months! and I have a ferret! . I love animals I really do and im all for helping them in need especially when they show up at my door...but the shelters arent accepting anymore cats they are full... and I have my exsisting babies to think about... Isis and Kinsey ( the original two) still need to finish up there shots and Kinsey is going into be spayed on sept 14... Then Cairo (the one who lived in the plastic bag in my mailbox) he needs to get his first round of shots...then be nuetered...then if there is somesort of health problem (GOD FORBID) and now this little guy needs the same...
not to mention my husband is going to throw us all out lol

Jaclyn....how is the shelter situation in Rhode Island?? Would this little one be able to find a home? Would they be able to care for him? The only thing I can think of is the new law that requires that animals are fixed or there is a possible fine. I wonder if this is causing people to "dump" kittens rather than take them into the shelter?

Katie-

The Shelters here are FULL to the max its ridiculous, they arent taking even a turtle in, im not exagerating. I heard that one of the no kill shelters here was sending its preg moms to a high risk kill shelters...im not sure how true that is but it seems possible since it was even on the news about how full everyone is, even the safe havens for animals in North Kingstown Rhode Island has shut their doors. I would just love to know why MY HOUSE. No one wants cats either... everyone has already adopted this kitten season or knew someone with a litter and i dont want to post an ad on craigslist especially with halloween coming along...and these kits being all black... there are nut jobs out there. I just dont know what to do

Jaclyn...please do not let the fact that they are all black deter you from posting on Craigslist...just make sure to charge an appropriate fee and do a thorough interview. We've advertized on Craigslist and have found a couple of really good homes that way.

Also...I don't know if you have ever used the "How to find homes for homeless pets" PDF from Best Friends..but you can find it here:

Check on Petfinder to find all the rescues near you. Call or e-mail each of them to let them know your situation. Tell them you absolutely cannot keep another kitten, but would be glad to foster it with a little help from them on the vet fees, and in allowing you to bring the babies to their adoption shows.

Be sure to let them know these are not your kittens, and you did not play a role in bringing them into the world, but you are willing to offer loving care until another home can be found.

Sometimes rescues quit accepting kittens due to lack of foster homes rather than lack of funds.

Also notify all your friends and family, and see if they will take a kitten and cover its vet fees. And start talking to your neighbors. Try to spread the word that you are not a replacement shelter and cannot accept any more kittens from irresponsible owners. Let any neighbors who offer interest know that it would help if they would make a donation directly to your vet in your name, to help with the care of the two new kittens.

I am so sorry to hear about the situation with the shelters over there. They always seem to be full when they're most needed.
You are so kind for taking in as many as you already have, as has been mentioned above, maybe try to find friends/neighbors who would take one and would do all of the vet expences. Or perhaps a shelter would be willing to help you financially if you're willing to foster? I wish you the best of luck as it's always so tragic to hear about kittens being thrown out or in overfilled shelters due to selfish ignorant people.

Keep us updated, I'll be thinking about you and the kittens you have taken in!

Let me address this because it makes it seem as if the shelters aren't there to help her...but the reality is that most shelters were built in a time when there were fewer animals and many of them have not received funding to be updated. So....fewer cages and more animals=more animals euthanized. Most shelter workers I know try their very best to help animals...but we all most do our part to reduce the number of animals that are born homeless and the owner give ups that flood the shelter system.

I do understand that - my bigger point was that it's unfortunate how so many people do let the shelters get overfilled by not being responsible and either throwing cats out and/or not getting them fixed. I do understand that shelters are there to help everyone, the situation occurs because of the people, not the shelters.
I'm sorry for being unclear, I do agree with you completely.

Thank you to everyone who has replied, but there are 0.00$ funds right now that can be spared according to the 9 shelters/rescues that I have called, all in which I have gotten the same responce " we are sorry for what is happening but we are full to the max, and the foster parents that are already enrolled with us they are priority...blah blah blah" as far as my neighbors go the hell with them no one cares much about anything else but themselves. So I will get this baby healthy...then Off to craigslist.com I go to post an ad I guess.

Jaclyn....here is an idea.....see if you can work with a vet. Ask if they will give you a discount on treatment and also if you can show him at the vet office once he is well.
