Has anyone heard of 4-5 week old kittens eating litter? A foster mom is having a problem with 3 of the 4 kittens wanting to eat the litter rather than use the litter box for what it was intended. Momma has been feeding the kittens and they watch her but we are confused as to why. Any ideas?

When my orphan kittens started using the litterbox, 3 out of the 5 tended to "eat" the litter. I think it was more out of curiosity than anything else. I discouraged them by immediately taking them out, wiping their mouths and hissing. After 2 days, they used the litterbox properly.

When Andy was a baby he used to eat the one made by newspaper. Then I remembered we used to have a cat that ate paper so I bought a different litter, and problem solved.

What kind of litter are you using? I would be concerned if they are eating clay litter since it absorbs moisture and could also cause intestinal problems. Maybe switch to another type of litter like Swheat Scoop (wheat based) or WBCL which (I believe) is corn based.
