I'm catsitting for the three cats upstairs while their mom and dad are away for the weekend. Today I wanted to get the smallest cat away from the others while I gave them their treat food (she eats in another room.)
Now, all three of these cats are overweight but Luna is smallest. When I went to pick her up I nearly fell over! This tiny, tiny cat makes little Gizmo look large, and she weighs about twice as much! This cat had to be over twelve pounds, possibly as much as fourteen.
I somehow got the cat into another room and gave everyone their treats. But I note that my friends have them eating 'diet cat food'. I asked if it worked and they said 'at least they are not getting any fatter," but it doesn't seem to be working. What brand of cat food is best for overweight cats? One of them would eat anything that isn't nailed down, and another one is one of the largest cats I've ever seen-about 26 pounds- and he's also very fond of his food.

Getting them off a complete dry food and onto a fairly good quality wet food will certainly help them with their weight. Dry food is often full of fillers and carbs. Bijou was over 16 lbs and since we've gone to more wet food and far less dry, he's lost a bit of weight and is maintaining much better.

Cats should never lose weight too rapidly though - it is very dangerous as they can go into liver failure.

Since these aren't my cats I really don't want to tick off the neighbours, but I think that the food is not very good for the animals.

Gizmo lost a pound in three months but that was mostly retained water since she was eating the wrong food.

I spoke with the neighbours about the cat food and they made the usual comments about being unable to ration three cats, etc. So I'll let the subject drop.
