I keep trying to clean the discharge under her eyes but it looks permanently stained and I can't get rid of it. I only tried with water and cotton buds, should I try something else?

To clean eyes you can use water or any number of eye wash preparations. If the eye is tearing excessively it could point to a problem which would need to be diagnosed properly before any remedies are suggested. Possible causes are chronic herpes infection, foreign body, conjunctivitis, scratched cornea, blocked drainage ducts, etc.
If you have simple eye stains from normal tearing there are several OTC products you can try- many of us have had great results with Eye Envy |

you should not use saline on cats eyes. plain filtered water or distilled water is the best. most human eye wash preps contain saline.

I can find no references for opthalmic saline solutions being contraindicated in cats.
