Cleaning kitten's eyes

I keep trying to clean the discharge under her eyes but it looks permanently stained and I can't get rid of it. I only tried with water and cotton buds, should I try something else? Experts, rescue me, please!

no don't use anything else to clean the eyes other than water and cotton or soft cloth. if you are worried about it consult your vet. some cats actually have stain like markings in the corners of their eyes. it's part of their camoflage and nothing to worry over. also as the kittens get older they will shed that coat and the stain, if that's what it is, will grow out.

To clean eyes you can use water or any number of eye wash preparations. If the eye is tearing excessively it could point to a problem which would need to be diagnosed properly before any remedies are suggested. Possible causes are chronic herpes infection, foreign body, conjunctivitis, scratched cornea, blocked drainage ducts, etc.

If you have simple eye stains from normal tearing there are several OTC products you can try- many of us have had great results with Eye Envy

you should not use saline on cats eyes. plain filtered water or distilled water is the best. most human eye wash preps contain saline.

I can find no references for opthalmic saline solutions being contraindicated in cats.
Can you point me to a cite?

Both my girls had or have Upper Respiratory Infections, and I only knew because of the gunk under their eyes and in the tear ducts...

I was given amoxicillan and triple antibotic cream to put in their eyes.

As for the stains,, Angel is a white cat, and her fur did stain a bit,, but using a warm wash cloth every single day, at least 3 to 4 times a day to clean the eye area,, it eventually wore off!!

Don't worry it'll go away.. My vet said not to use any thing but warm water and let it sit on her eye as so it'll come right off. She said I could use a cotton ball or qtip and that was it!! She said that it's common that if you use an eye wash you can hurt their eyes or scar them!!!

Have your babies eyes check out.. If you don't,, you could hurt their eyes for life..

Can you point me to a cite?

i don't know about online references but i can look and ask if my vet has some info on it. i have had 6 vets tell me this and i'm a vet nurse and have been told this through training.
