Im sure ALL of you know..but how and what makes a cat purr? Is it always from petting? is it somthing their bodies naturally do even if they arent in the mood to be happy?

It is a comfort response.
They do it when they are happy, but they will also do it (to comfort themselves) when they are scared or in pain.

It is completely voluntary.

I always thought it meant they were happy. As long as they are purring they are happy.

I will have to pay more attention now that I know they also do it when they are scared. Thanks for the information!!

I also thought it was a sign of pleasure, but when Ruby was giving birth, she was purring more that I'd ever heard her purr and she was definitely not happy!
