Hi , I'm new to these forums . I have been looking at all your forums and i have not been able to find anything on Radial Hypoplasia also known as "Kangaroo Cats" or Twisty Cats" . I was just wondering if there was anyone here who might have one.
I have an adorable 8 month old . Her name is Kink . She is half ragdoll. The most affectionate cat i have ever owned.
I'm not sure how to attach pics yet but when i figure it out i will list a pic of her.

I only know a little bit about it since my cat is polydactyl. There are two poly genes, one of which is tied to radial hypoplasia if the cat is homozygous for it. It's a very debiltating deformity. The Twisty cats are not supposed to be bred anymore and are outlawed in several countries. How did you come to aquire her? A responsible breeder should not have had this happen.

It was a birth defect in my lil' Kink. The owners of he mum think it happened because her mum was too young to have kittens. Her mum was only 6 to 8 months old i think. She was brought home to be by my boyfriend. I think she was going to be put to sleep if they couldn't find he a home. She was the worst out of 3 kittens and the other 2 had already found homes. She has no other problems that us or the vet have found so far. The only problem she has had is a nasty abses on one of her elbows .

Thankyou very much for the links , I am looking at them at the moment.

That is pretty young. Was the mother polydactyl? My understanding was that most of the time, this happens from a polydactyl breeding. If they didn't know who the father was, it's very possible that he was also a poly.

Good luck with her! She looks like she does have some front legs. I've seen pics of cats that were much worse off, so she should be fine with some extra care. I think the first link also talks about additional health problems to watch for with her paws.

The only thing i know about her mum is that she is a ragdoll and she was too young to have kittens and the male broke into the house ripping screens open to get to kinks mum while her owners were out.
Thankyou for all your help on the subject . I had found a few websites about RH but those sites i had not seen yet. Very informative .

at the shelter where I work we have one. i didn't know it was a common genetic thing. She is in very poor shape. Both her front legs are messed up and she can only walk on one and her back legs are twisted as well. I thought it was just a birth defect.

She is sooo sweet. She has kittens, one of whom is a polydactyl, but are all "normal" otherwise.

I'll take a look at the links. I appreciate it!

ETA: Why on this green earth would make a cat like that?? How sad. How very very sad.

Not me , But the first time i had ever heard or seen a cat with RH was Kink.
I thought like many others have thought was that she had broken her legs and nothing was done about it , until my boyfriend (the one who brought home my lil' darling) tried to explain what he was told. I then looked it up online.

This is one of the sites i have found.

The age of the mother cat does not play a role in that specific disorder. Her genese as well as the genes of the father do. Her disorder is a genetic amnormality. I really wish I could give you more info on this, but that's about the extent of my knowledge on that topic. Any plans to have the kitty seen by a vet and spayed yet??? Your vet can give you answers to many of those questions you may have about her condition as well as tips on how to care for her- that is very important in her progress.
She is quite a cutie! Keep us posted!

Kink is doing great. Her calling is getting quite unbearable. So much noise comes out of such a small cat. Not long now and She won't have to go thru that ever again.

No they can't correct her legs. She will just be going in to have a routine spay and a check up at the vet.Kink gets into more mischief than any of the other cats.

I am wondering how your cat is doing.  I was looking at buying a ragamuffin kitten from a breeder who offered me two kittens at a very discounted price because they have radial hypoplasia.  From the videos I have watched of these two kittens they seem to get along just fine.  We would love to give them a home.  I am wondering if you have noticed any long term affects with yours.  If yours has needed extra medical attention, expenses etc.  I am single mom and my daughter is an only child and we solely want a kitten for the companionship and love, so a deformity isnt a big deal, but huge expenses may be or it may break our hearts to see them struggle or in pain later.

I have a cat that is what they call a twisty cat. It was born at my house and I have had him for a couple years. I did not know why he was deformed until I recently started researching his condition. He is a sweet cat but I can not get him to use a litter box. I thought since he walks on his arms that perhaps the clay litter hurt him so I started using the wood type litter. I also have a large kennel that I put him in and he will use the litter box if it is clean and other cats have not used it. I however can not keep him in a cage all the time so I let him out most of the time and he continues to use the carpet. I am frustrated and have other cats so I can not just keep his cage open because they will all go into use his litter box. I have been dealing with this for his whole life! I love him but he really needs to be an only cat! your cat is adorable and her paws look like his.
