I have recently taken in a stray that was abandoned when my neighbors moved. He appears to have developed an ear problem while running wild. He has a crust in his ears and his face seems a little swollen below them. The back of his ears are scraped up from him scratching.I was thinking it was probably ear mites, but am afraid to buy over the counter medicines and cause him unnecessary pain or even harm. Any,help, advice or suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

welcome to TCS! Bless you for taking in that abandoned kitty, poor guy
Until you get him to the vet, you might try gently bathing his ears with warm water & cotton balls, to loosen the crust, and follow it with warm olive oil. My cats get itchy ears, and my vet has me squirt a little warm olive oil in their ears, but that's when they don't have that dark crust. I know in your area that mites and fleas are a real problem and I feel esp. bad about the poor homeless creatures that are out on their own down there. My folks are from Cucamonga (yeah, before there was a "RANCHO" in front, and Rialto was still Rialto) and Colton, so I'm familiar with Ontario. By the way, ever go to Graber Olives, on 4th Street?? The world's best olives

Thanks catsknowme: I have tried warm oil. The crust is too deep in the ear for me to safely get out. I guess it's off too the vet we go. I live on the 300 east block of "F" st., about 6 blocks from the olive house. I used to live in cucamonga before they changed the name, It's a small world.

Thanks Again
