My cat Spike has been plagued with skin allergies for the last couple of years. It would usually get so bad I would have to take him to the vet and they would give him a steroid shot which would pretty much clear it up. With this breakout I am trying to avoid the shot because I am uneasy about the long term effects of steroids. Anyway my holistic vet has him on some homeopathic remedies and I have changed his food again and surprisingly he is doing much better. He was real scabby and she suggested combing him gently everyday to remove the scabs because they would make him itchy and that is really working. I haven't seen him scratch at all, however, there is one spot on his leg that is about the size of a dime that he has licked and it's red and raw looking. Would it be safe to put neosporin or polysporin on it? I worry about him licking it off. I would ask the vet but she is out of town. Has anybody else ever used either of these on their cats? Is there something better to use? Any input is appreciated.

I would use bag balm instead. Neosporin if used needs to be used very sparingly. He will if you use bag balm smell it a few times and decline to lick it.

I don't know if this is the same with cats, but with rabbits (which also lick themselves clean) you shouldn't use Neosporin Plus because the added painkiller can upset their stomachs. Regular Neosporin is safe. Better safe than sorry.
