Hello all,

I'm a 21 year old professional from Brighton, UK and I'd just like a little advice.

I don't currently have a cat in my house, but I would love to have one; I always had cats when I lived with my mum and they always became 'mine' ie: i fed, cuddled and looked after them.

I would really love to have a pair of kittens but I'm worried that as i work 9-5 every day that they would get lonely, my girlfriend is in 2/3 days a week but the other 2/3 she isn't.

Would the kittens get lonely even if there were two?

I was thinking I could get them on a wednesday and get thursday and friday off of work to spend 4 solid days with them and then the following week i could make sure my girlfriend is always in, so they're not lonely when they first come to their new home!

Any thoughs would be greatly appreciated, how do others that work a full week manage their cats?

First of all welcome to TCS!!

I think that spending a good solid 4 or 5 days at first with your new kittens is a great idea...and I'm sure they would adjust to your schedule just fine

I agree that 4-5 days would be fine to get them used to their new home. Welcome!

Have you picked a pair out yet? I think two kittens together are better than leaving 1 home alone all day to get into trouble. At least with 2, they can keep each other company.

thank you all!

Well I've looked at a pair of Maine Coons and they were gorgeous. aww.

I would really love to get a Norwegian Forest, they're kind of similar (to me anyway!) but apearently they're quite rare
! also they're very furry...and they love to explore the outdoors and I live in a busy-ish area so I'd worry about them!

I generally really like mackrel patterned cats (because my first cat was a tabby), but I'm sure I could love any cat really

any thoughts on the Norwegian Forest cat?

One of my favorite breeds

I'm owned by a Wegie.

She's a dog in a cat's costume

Very loving, she was very easy to train (she comes, sits and lies down on command), she gives hugs and kisses.
She's 100% indoors, but she does like to help me with my gardening on the patio and follows me in when I'm done.
She has no desire to be outside without me.

Until she got older, her coat was a dream to care for, requiring very little actually.
She does shed a lot in the spring as she loses her winter ruff, but otherwise, she doesn't drop hair any more than any shorthaired cat.

She's the red tortie in my sig, although she used to be a red/black brindled tortie....age has not been nice to her coat.

Getting two kittens is a great idea. As well as the three indoor/outdoor kitties, we have two indoor only. Lily used to get really lonely before her brother joined us. Now, the two indoor kitties keep each other company just fine

Hey Robin and gf:

Glad to meet you! You're on the right track wanting to adopt a pair of kittens -- they will keep one another company and if you adopt brothers or sisters or a combo from the same family, they will have a deep bond already. Your idea is a great one; as long as you provide the basics (good quality food, clean water, maybe treats and cat-friendly milk like CatSip, good litter and litterbox, safe toys, and maybe one or more pieces of cat furniture that they can climb, lounge, play, and sleep on, plus scratching posts and pads), and of course make sure someone is home at least once every day, they should adapt very well! I'm posting this on 26 September, so this is probably old news by now, and your kittens are probably well on their way to being beloved members of your family, right? Anyway, I've lived with and loved cats all my life, and currently am servant to 9!, so wish you all the best and hope to see you and your kittens on site!

Hi.

I think getting two furbabies is an excellent idea. They would be great company for eachother during the day--which most of the time they would sleep. I also think it is a great idea spending four days together rightoff. That way there, you would get to know them and they would get to know you. You could also leave for short periods of time just to see how they handle your absence. We always had two, and never regretted it. We now have four---still don't regret it!!! Good luck, keep us posted!
