Last Saturday my 2 year old female cat Tinky had to go to the vets because she had been sick and was quite smelly. We found out that she had problems with her anal glands which had to be squeeze. It's not a very pleasant subject but I want to find out more information about this.

She is still throwing up her food (last time was tonight) the Vet said this happened because where she has tried to clean the gland area the infection is now in her system.
Does anyone know how long the infection will stay in her system?
She's on antibiotics for the next couple of weeks so I'm hoping she'll stop being sick soon.

I've never had this problem before & Tinky is my first female cat so I'm wondering..
Does it occur more in females?
Does anyone else have this problem with their cat?
& Could this happen again?
My Vet said it was extremely rare for a cat to get problems with the glands.

I feel bad because at the moment the only way I can help her is give her antibiotics.

Thanks for any help
x

Yes, one feels so helpless when the babies are ill.
The effect of the antibiotics will come with time. Sending lots of healing vibes to Tinky!

I would give her just a small amount of plain yogurt with active cultures to help chase the bad bacteria out. Is she drinking water? If you can, encourage her to drink; float her toys in the water bowl, dribble a small amount of tuna juice in her water, give her ice chips if she will lick those.

It isn't that rare for glands to get impacted. You can learn to express them yourself if hers keep plugging up, but you need to have a strong stomach to do this.

it isn't just females, my one male Oliver gets his stopped up from time to time and I have to express them to give him relief.

huge thanks for the advice we gave her yogurt and although she only had some now & again it seems to be working. she is drinking normally and although her appetite is not 100% she is getting it back. she has also almost completely stopped being sick.
i'm so relieved. although i have a weak stomach if she happens to get problems with her anal glands again (i hope not though) i'm willing to learn to express them myself.
