Four ferals have shown up at my apartment complex- a mother, father and two kittens. I want to TNR them but have some questions (I've never done this before).

To get cats speutered, all the vets and clinics seem to require an appointment. Trouble is I don't know when they will climb into the trap. I don't want to keep them in a trap for a week waiting for an appointment.

Cats shouldn't eat 8-12 hours before receiving anesthesia. How do I control that if there is food in the trap?

Hi confumercity....here is what you do....feed them in the trap for a few days ahead of time (but with the trap in a locked position so that the door doesn't close)..that way they will become familiar with eating out of the trap. Then...when you are ready, set the trap and wait. Hopefully they will all be trapped this way. As far as setting up an appt...if you do what I suggested above you will have a better chance of catching the family and thus making your appt. Even if you don't catch all of them...you should at least catch one. As for the food in the trap....the idea is to trap them the day before..that way...they should eat all the food prior to their appt.

Good Luck!!

I do alot of TNR work! be very careful when handling the cage. if it is a bar cage that the cats are able to reach through and the family is truly feral put a blanket or something over to reduce the risk of being scratched. i cant tell you how many people we have had that end up in the hospital because of this. also contact a TNR rescue group and offer to pay the exspences. they are often able to get you in that day if they have vet on staff. and EAR TIP PLEASE. it makes it so much easier for the rest of us.
