Hi All,

About a month a go my cat Nika started limping. I came home from work and noticed the limp in her front left paw. I immediately took her into the vet and they did x-rays but didn't find anything wrong. Before bringing her home they gave her a shot with a steriod to help her out. Well the steriod helped her for about a week, then she started limping again. This time she had started limping on her rear left leg. I took her in again they did x-rays again and still didn't find anything. They gave her another shot and sent home some pills this time with us. I've been giving her anti-inflamatory medication since then twice a day. Her limp is now getting worse and she's looking really sick. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would cause a limp like this?
Thanks for listening.
Laurien

We just went through this with a few of our kitties - it sounds like it might be calicivirus. You've probably vaccinated for it, as we had, but we were told there is a new strain going around. Talk with your vet about it. Our cats went on an antibiotic and interferon therapy for 2 weeks. It's important to get it treated a.s.a.p. if that's what it is because you have a very sick kitty on your hands. Hope this helps - I don't want to scare you, but this was our experience just last month.

Thank you for responding to my post. I just did some research on it and it sounds just like her. I gave her anti-inflamitory meds the other day and she isn't limping today and seems like a normal happy cat. I will call the vet on Monday to see if they can do a test on her to see if it is that. Thank you again.

Also, you may want to start your cat on a glucosamine-chondroitin supplement or something like Cosequin to help keep the joints moving and rebuild any lost cartilage. It will also help with mobility. This is in addition to whatever meds the doctor gives you when you take her in.

Do you know if there is something quick that could be done to help her? We are moving to Hawaii on September 9th and I just want her to be well when we go.

Did you call the vet? What'd they say about calicivirus, or did they have any other ideas?

She's looking a little better today. I think she's just got anxiety becuase everything in the house is moving around. We're packing up the house becuase of the move to Hawaii. Poor Baby Kitty. Anywho Thanks again and I will post on what happens tomorrow.

Well they did some blood tests. 5 to be exact...and she came up negative for all of them. Her white blood cell count was a little high and she had a slight fever. She's on antibiotics now so we're getting somewhere. She hasn't limpped in about a week. I hope it doesn't start up again. They think it was an infection in her joints. Woo hoo! No Arthiritis or however its spelled. Now she's being lazy becuase of all the meds. Thanks for everyones advice
