I have 2 cats that are brothers, they are 11 months old. All of a sudden within the past month, one of my cats gained like 2 lbs or so and just looks so much bigger while my other cat is the same size. Is this normal for growing cats or do you think there may be a problem? Like a thyroid issue or something?

As always, if you are concerned with something about your cats health, it is best to get them in to the vet for a check and express your concerns. 2 lbs. in a month for a cat is quite out of range for normal I would think.

Good Luck!

If the kitty seems to gain more weight in a short amount of time, go to your vet and ask about restricted calorie for cats- a eukanuba vet diet. it is pretty bland and depends on the cat to eat it. it is low in calories, and in a few weeks you should see a drastic improvement, but only use it if your cat is becoming too chubby.

Ya know I guess now that looking again, he's really not "chubby" He looks as if he has filled out, even his head is bigger. It just happened so fast.

If you have concerns, your vet is of course the best bet. Don't worry yourself too much, though. My cat put on several pounds within a month when she was about a year old-- of course, she'd been living on the streets before that point and needed to put on some weight! I had some of the same questions as you when this happened, and the vet told me that hypo-(as opposed to hyper-)thyroidism is pretty rare in cats, especially when they're so young.

My Lucy and Ethel were within a month of each other in age, adopted both at the same time and they were the same size. Lucy has "blossomed" and is now half again bigger in diameter than Ethel.
I worried about glandular malfunction, too, but vet said it is not something you see with cats, (though not uncommon in dogs.)
He said too many calories for the amount of exercise that particular cat did was making her (f-a-t). Don't tell Lucy.
I always tell her she is plushy, prosperous and be-yoo-ti-ful.

She is on diet food, I love her best, and my vet says, "a fat cat is a dead cat." Charmant, n'est-ce pas?
