she was sitting by the fence, then scooted to the back yard, about 4 feet long. Finally took a kitchen tongs, put her in a box and placed her in the woods, where its a bit more froggy for her. She is a striped garter snake, NC, not venomous, but will bite if cornered, and let off a stinky smell as well.

Pretty snake - I like the corn and milk snakes better - they are more colorful.

Are you SURE its a garter? Looks more like the ribbon snake I had.

I found one of those on my bathroom floor last week! Bad cats brought it in to show me.

yep, its a striped garter. I searched many NC snake sites. The more common garter is without the stripes. The giveaway is the black checkerboard pattern of her body by the stripes.
