I dont know if anyone has encountered this before. My cat gave birth to 4 healthy little kittens 2 and a half weeks ago,she is a good mother to them and seems to love them very much, but in the last week she has started to bite her kittens in what seems to be an aggressive manner. It usually starts when she reaches for them with her paws to lick them, then she starts holding em and giving them long bites, not only behind their neck but in the front and on their belly. It sorts of look like what a cat do with a toy. What worries me is that the kittens are yelling really loudly when she does it,as if she was hurting them.I havent seen any wounds on the kittens and i dont think shes trying to kill them but could all that rough handling traumatize them?Im pretty sure this is her first litter,we adopted her 4 months ago,she was a stray.

thanks!

Mizzy....I would simply keep an eye on the situation. She may be a bit rough with them because she is inexperienced. As long as they are gaining weight and mom isn't in fact hurting them....then I think it will be ok. Once the kittens reach 10-12 weeks of age, they can be placed into homes and I would really recommend you set up your mom cat's spay appt. for around that time. Make sure you keep her strictly indoors only and away from intact males until she is spayed.

My cat did that when she had her kittens too. I think they were also around the same age as yours. I scared me. She would grab them, lick them, then bite and not let go, after a couple second she would then start kicking them with her back feet. I just took the kittens away, tapped the mama on the nose and told her "No!" She stopped after a day or too and didn't so it again until they got older, but by then they attacked her back.LOL!
