I'm not sure if she's actually stop producing milk but the kittens are meowing all the time even when she's there so I'm wondering if they're hungry?

The kittens are 2.5 weeks old now. This morning, the mum was acting really strange and there was obviously something wrong with her head (weird position, laying down etc) so we took her to the vet. He said she had a slight soar throat and a temperature so he gave her a jab plus some tablets (antibiotics , I think). He knows she just had kittens so the medication he gave her is probably kitten-safe.

I guess my question is: do cats stop producing milk when they're ill? Or produce less milk?

I'm not too sure about the milk situation but I'm sorry to hear about your puddy cat

Hope she gets better soon.

Are the kittens doing better now? If they are still crying, they will definitely need to be supplemented with formula.

Cats can definitely produce less milk and/or no milk if they are sick. If a mother isn't eating and ill, that can be very dangerous for the babies. If this is the case, they will need supplementation with milk replacement. You can squeeze her nipples to assess for milk. Usually well fed kittens will be quiet and not scrambling for nipples. Kittens that are loud and scrambling for nipples are usually having trouble getting food.

It certainly sounds as if there may be a problem and kittens can starve very quickly. If I were you I would go to your nearest pharmacy or petstore and get some Kitten replacement milk and a feeding set, also a large syringe without needle as some kittens take time to adjust to a feeding bottle and learn to feed them yourself. Obviously try and get the mother cat better soon as she can do it better, but it is good to be prepared. They will need feeding every 2-3 hours at their age. It is time-consuming but very rewarding to save their lives this way.
