This may be an odd question, but is KMR alright to give older kitties. I don't mean seniors, but 3-4 month olds.

I have had many questions after taking in these orphans in need of some real attention in all areas. The thing they like the most is the KMR. It does not matter if it is pre-mixed or powder, they just love it. As their weight was what I considered low I gave it to them, but now at about 14 weeks they are eating well, dry and canned, gaining weight and I don't think they need it, but they like it. Is there any harm in continuing it?

My 2 13-week old girls still beg for KMR, and I'll give in once a day. I don't give them much, about 1/4 cup that they share. They used to beg for it 3 or 4 times a day, so they're obviously outgrowing the need for it. Someone on this board told me it was ok to give it to older kittens, just not a lot because it could result in too much weight gain.

Thank you for the information. At this point we need weight gain so I will continue with it, but will be watching for signs of too much weight gain. Don't want that problem.

Thanks,

Personally, I only used it to mix in when first weaning kittens - 5-6 weeks old - by the time they were 8-9 weeks old, it was not necessary - they were on kitten Iams dry and canned.

I wouldn't feed it to the older kittens, because it can cause diarrhea. I would look instead at other problems for the lack of weight gain- parasites perhaps? Put them on a good canned kitten food and good kitten dry food. KMR is really just for the bottle babies as they grow.

Thanks for the ideas. I think the low weight, if you have not read about my babies, is due to not being with the mother. She moved the litter and left these 2 behind. Children carried them until dehydration. A neighbor took them in and fed them only moistened dry foot and canned food. They came to me with 2 kinds of worms. We are now on the way back up, and I used the KMR to help supplement their nutrition. I will keep a check on their stools though.

Thanks,

Mickee
