ragdoll vs. birman

help! i cannot decide between getting a ragdoll or a birman! they seem very similar. does anyone have any helpful ideas?
i am looking for an affectionate pet to live indoors in my apartment of a little over 1000 square feet. i am looking for a loveable pet, who likes people but if i go out of town for a few days, will not be miserable without me.
please help!!!!!!!
i also can't seem to decide between a male or female. i have had both, one male was super loving, one female was a little aloof, and the other male, avoided any contact and affection.
like i said i want a snuggler.
please any insights will be greatly appreciated.

After having handled both, I would go for the Ragdoll. To me the ragdolls are much more of a lovable lap cat. The disposition of either is about the same, with the edge going to the ragdoll.

If I was you I would keep my mind open and call several breeders in your area. I would inquire on the parents of the kittens and most good breeders can tell you which kitten seems to meet your needs. When you find the right kitten which ever breed it is it will because of its particular persobnality.
You will also find out more on each breed by talking to breeders. And every cattery promotes different ideals. Look for the breeder that produces what you are looking for.

I don't know much about the breeds. I have 2 males, and 2 females, and the males are much more affectionate and snuggly than the females. I love my girls, but if I am looking for a cuddle, they boys, always!

Well, it depends. Both Birman and Ragdoll could make great pets...each breed has its own unique qualities...why not see for yourself? Go to a cat show or a breeder and spend time with both...and it always depends on the cat
About male vs. female...from what I know and have heard, females generally are more affectionate, but so can males. Try to judge the cat by its purrsonality, not its gender. Hope I helped some!

RAGDOLL, all the way! Ragdolls are such great cats, I have two of my own, and I wouldn't trade them for the world! I have a total of 4 cats, two males and two females (both Ragdolls are female). People say that males are friendlier, and they are, to an extent, but my spayed female Raggie, Frankee, is a total momma's girl and LOVES attention!

Let us know what you decide!
