Hello everyone. I am new to the site. I have 2 cats named Sammy and Nemo. They are both domestics and my family and I adore them. They were both strays when we took them.

Sammy has always had problems with her ears. Her right ear in particular. Her ear is often red and irritated. Inside her ear ius filled with brown gunk. We have taken her to the vet many times for this. The vet usually cleans it out, checks for mites (There are never any!), gives us nova- cleanse, tells us to change her diet and clean her ears.

We have done everything they recomended and it just keeps coming back! It's very frustrating! She scratches her ear so much it bleeds and she lets out a loud cry! It's breaking my heart!

Any advice would be greatly apreciated! Thanks!

Have they checked for a yeast infection? I had a cat with this once before and now have a dog with it. It is so hard to get rid of...at least it has been for me. My little dog's ear was so red and she was constantly crying and digging at it. I felt so bad for her. The first medicine the vet gave me didn't clear it up so he gave me something that is new that you apply once a day. She is starting to do much better. I would ask them to check for yeast and I hope your kitty gets better soon.

Cathy C is right. That could be a yeast infection. It can be cured with diet. I'd see another vet.

Funny I should be reading this thread, because I just got back from the vet with my 9y/o cat, Jack, who has the same thing going on with his right ear, from the head shakes, to the dark colored "crud" removed when I tried to clean it. It was not earmites, but an infection, with just a small amount of "pus" starting to form deep in the ear.
So we are home on antibiotics, oral and ear drops for the next 10 days, oral, and 2 weeks ear drops.

Great thanks for the advice!! She is going to a new doctor tommorrow. I will ask them to check for yeast.

We feed her Fancy Feast Dry Food. This is her favorite food and she doesn't eat anything else we have tried. I want to try science diet hypoallergenic mix or whatever its called. Hard part is going to be convincing my mom to risk feeding her food she doesn't like... haha. She is too sympathetic to the cats sometimes. My cat nemo is about 15 pounds now. I keep telling her to stop feeding him the fancy feast wet food but she doesn't listen. But I'm off topic now.

I'll update after the doctor visit. Thank you all so much for your help!!

Meow mix dry is full of potential allegens... before you spend $$ on Rx diets you may want to try one without by product s , ground corn , artificial colors and chemical presevatives...

I personally would start with Natural balences ( found at pet stores and Petco ) venison and pea formula... it comes in canned also

My vet recommended I not use venison for my allergic cat since it was too similar to beef (another known allergen.) I recommend rabbit since it is closest to what they normally eat; and Nature's Logic and Nature's Variety both make canned rabbit. Nature's Logic also makes rabbit kibble which is what i feed Gizmo. They have just started a frozen raw diet line that I have not seen anywhere in stores, but might be available on their website.
Corn and wheat should be avoided in all cat foods. A cheaper food for cats that can have chicken is California Natural Chicken and Rice; my cat loved it, and I loved it til it was determined that she is allergic to chicken.
There are other good brands out there. Just read the ingredients and avoid all the ones that use corn and wheat as filler.

Beef is not a high cat allergy, yes some are but this kitty needs a siplier food .... Most of us would have to order in the ones you recommended as they arent carried by the Big stores... OH and rabbit as I found can be highly allergenic also ( unsure why but it is at my house) ...
Cal natural is a very good option but chn is rising in the number of kitty allergies very FAST...
