When I built the "Tupperlair" and the used the plastic shelving for cat trees and a way to get into the lairs, I was afraid that one of the cats might stick a foot into one of the leg openings on top of the shelves and possibly break a leg when jumping down. Sooooo, I cut some short sections of the uprights for the shelves and added little extensions above the shelf. This also made a great place for pinning down bedding and padding for the cats to lay on.
