So i was reading H~chan's thread about her poodle she might get (which by the way..That would be so neat if you did get the puppy..Good luck
), But I noticed a couple seeming against the thought of someone getting a puppy from a Pet store.
& I had'nt a clue there was anything wrong with it..
WHAT did I miss??
I always want to buy one a puppy from the Pet store, simply because I hate the way they seem treated there. Kept in small little cages.
I just want to buy them all!

The problem is that most are BYB or mill puppies.

We'd all like to save them, but when you buy one, it just furthers the cause in the favor of these mills.
Each puppy (or kitten) sold makes room for another one to take it's place and the cycle just continues.
Same is true for birds and some exotics at large chain stores.

Perhaps this article will help explain things

http://www.caninecrib.com/dog/articles/puppy-mills.asp

While doing research for this, I met a truck driver who told me a horror story about a semi full of puppies that were intentionally doped to keep them unconscious while transporting over the state line
Many of the puppies were dead by the time the load arrived to its destination, because of the idiots who were pouring the liquid down their throats because there were so many dogs.

Definately don't want to buy a dog from a pet shop. As bad as you feel you are just supporting puppy mills and backyard breeders. I always want to tell people that when I see them buying a puppy from the mall pet shops. I saw them sell a puppy to a maybe 18 year old kid once. Him and his friend were so proud of themselves for buying a puppy for $500 or whatever. I just wanted to hit them.

Well that's a bummer.
I had no idea

So do all the un-sold puppies just get put to sleep then? They live thier life in horrible conditions, and never get to see the happy part of life? This is just sad. Makes me hate more people.

It's terribly sad. Pet stores that sell puppy mill dogs are everywhere and I refuse to patronize any of them. Fortunately there was one shop near by that shut their doors. They were selling designer breeds, (mutts), for hundreds of dollars and that just made me ill.

No reason to spend $500 on a dog when there are millions waiting in shelters that will love you just as much, if not more. If you must have a purebred find a responsible breeder

I will just concur with all the posters here. Its no mystery that I am strongly Anti-byb, anti puppy/cat mill.....

The smaller ma and pop shops aren't exempt either. While not all pet shops get their pups from typical puppy mills, they often buy dogs from local byb'ers who are comparatively small time. These people may only breed one kind of dog or three rather than the hundreds that a Puppy mill may produce but they are still the same supplier, just on a smaller scale...

No self respecting breeder would use a middleman like a pet shop.

If they are a good breeder, they would have a waiting list for their dogs and would NEVER have to sell them to a pet shop...

So, yes, Lilleah..unfortunately, these often sickly poor lil pups have undetermined fates but if you do buy from them, another will just pop up in its place. Its all supply and demand.

The owners who buy dogs from these people are not screened in any way and often get rid of the dog eventually anyway. That is, if the pup doesn't succumb to an illness first...

I agree, but you can find purebreds in shelters, too.
