Salem gave birth yesterday and she seems to have given up cleaning herself. Today there was poo smeared on her back end and she seemed totally oblivious. I know while she was pregnant it was hard for her to keep her nether regions clean but I expected once the kittens came she would get back into the swing of things. I worry it will be unsanitary for the kittens to come in contact with it and she seems adamant not to let me clean it for her. I checked the litter and it's completely clean, I've been cleaning it twice a day lately so that can't be it. Any ideas? Should I be worried or is this normal behavior for a new momma?

I would definitely say not normal... Is she acting extra lackluster? Maybe the milk production is extra draining and needs some extra calories? I really don't know but it is unsanitary for the kittens to be exposed to moms poo. Adult poo carries things that kittens can easily pick up.

She seems fine actually, she leaves when the kits are all asleep and sits on my lap a bit but otherwise has been very attentive. Is there something you would suggest giving her to add a few calories to her diet? I have her on high quality kitten food already.

Thanks, I'll try again to get it cleaned up a bit myself.

Okay, I got her and washed her back-end with some gentle kitty shampoo that I use sometime since my roommate has alergies. I tried not to get her wet anywhere else since I didn't think it would be good for the kittens to get wet cuddling with momma. Once I had washed it all off she started grooming herself again to dry off so *hopefully* that will be enough to solve the problem and it wont happen again. She is now back with the kittens nursing them.
