Scratch went to the vet 10 days ago, and she found that he had a gum infection. He's been on liquid meds, and the infection isn't getting better. Yet, he has become more active, and is eating more. I called the vet today and she wants to have him on the meds for another week. I'm getting worried that this may be an autoimmune disorder. Does anyone have experience with this?

Before Molly had her dental, she was on antibiotics for two weeks to reduce the inflamation and infection before the dental could be carried out. She was then on weaker ones for a week afterwards to aid with clearing any infection.

Has your vet recommended a dental?

Not yet, she's worried that he's only 11 months and having this type of infection. I am just praying that the meds work.

We found a kitty a couple years ago near the end of November and named him Tigger. We took him to the vet, he has an incredibly infected tooth and needed surgery. They took it out but the damage was done. He was gone befor Christmas. (this is only my experiance but I wanted to let you now it could turn into somthing serious you have to keep a close eye on it)

Teeth & gum infections can spread to the brain rapidly. Befor you run out of medication take Scratch back to the vet so that if it hasn't cleared up the vet can imediately put him on somthing stronger. I hope scratch is feeling better soon <<Dental vibes>>

by autoimmune disease, are you referring to leukemia or FIV? I know that FeLV+ kitties have a higher incidence of dental disease, it was what started Simon downhill.... has Scratch been tested for FeLV and FIV?

Yes, and he is negative. The vet said it was something where he would be rejecting his teeth, like a human would reject a kidney or lung transplant.

Well thats good to hear

thats basically what the vet said about my Simers, that he was rejecting his own teeth
they said he had the teeth of a 10 year old at approx 3 years old.... hope Scratch gets better soon!

I hate to be the one to say this, but my Twitch went through the same thing. At 11 months, her teeth were rotten. We had them removed quite awhile ago(she was 2 at the time). She was on anti-biotics on & off for a long time. She is now 4 years old, completely toothless, and sassy as all get out! We tried every type of anti-biotics we could think of. I finally went to another vet & she took all the teeth. There was nothing that could be done.

You need to monitor Scratch's teeth very closely. If he(I'm sorry if Scratch is a girl
) is eating less, not acting well, go to the vet ASAP! Don't wait like I did with Twitch. I wish I had gotten a second opinion much sooner & saved her all the pain & suffering.

Thank you so much everyone. He seems to be okay right now, but I am watching over him like a hawk. After going on the meds his energy level increased and he's been eating more, so I think that is a good sign. We have another week of meds and then we will take it from there. I'm just hoping that this fixes the problem. I don't want him to go through getting all of his teeth pulled, if I can help that at all.

He's my little baby though. He always askes first before doing something. He will stand over a box of newspaper and just look at me as to say "Meowmy, can I shred these for you?" I'll say "Go ahead Scratch." and he digs in like there is no tomrrow.

Man I never thought this would be this stressful. Thanks again...

I'm probably over-reacting, but I don't want any other cat to go through what Twitch did. I would just keep an eye on Scratch's teeth. I would also suggest routine 6 month check-ups, just in case. I know some people go to the vet 1x a year, but if you are concerned about Scratch's teeth...2x a year might not be a bad idea.

Oh he'll go in every three months until I'm comfortable with the situtation!
