Hmmm...what's avocado like? good question! Texture: A properly ripe one can best be likened to not quite hard butter. Very smooth and tender, and the softest part of it is almost a paste. Flavour is harder to get the language around!
It's very mild, but you couldn't call it bland. I'm just trying to think of other flavours that come to mind when I hold the flavour of avocado in , and the one that keeps pushing in is cooked egg yolk. Not the same, mind, but the same kind of soft flavour -- one that marries well with slightly salty flavours (seafood, bacon), acid flavours (citrus, tomato)...

Anyway, a nice avocado is heaven, and now I have to go and pick up another one or two, because Rob's got his mouth set for guacamole.

ETA: Susie, I was so wrapped up in trying to describe avocado for Susan that I forgot to say I'll leave the shrimps off yours -- all the more for us

Never had avocado or guacamole! I've seen pictures of guacamole, but just never had the urge to eat something that looked like green...............

You can be forgiven for that reaction, but it's worth the risk!

They're actually quite good. When I was in Mexico visiting a school, lunch was ham and avocado sandwiches with avocado instead of cheese, and it was quite delicious!
