Please help! I took in a stray that was pregnant so that after she gives birth and weans her babies, I can get them all spayed and neutered. I have done this quite a few times and have been extremely lucky - until now. One of the newborns does not have it's skin fully covering it's back. I'm not sure what to do since there are no vets available for me to go to. Also, the mamma seems to be less attentive to her kittens compared to other litters from other cats. When I came into the room she jumped up and ran to me. In my very very little experience, all other mammas would not leave their babies and would hiss, spit and/or swat if necessary. This makes me very concerned. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Tracy

Tracy.....I would set your mom in a room and try not to disturb her too often...but definately spend time with her and her kittens when you go into feed her etc. Do you have a scale?? If not, I would buy a small scale so you can weigh her babies weekly and potentially supplement them if they need additional nutrition.

I'm confused by the fact that you are able to get the kittens fixed but have no access to a vet. I would say given the one kitten's skin issue, it probably needs medical attention. Is there a rescue group that you could work with who could take on that particuliar kitten's medical needs??

Hi Katie. I'm sorry, I was confusing last night - very nervous. I have access to a vet during normal hours (9am - 7pm ish) and have access to a neuter/spay clinic as well. I didn't have access to a vet last night at 1am and was in a bit of a panic. The mamma and her babies are set up in a private room with a box, towel, heating pad under one corner of the box, and an approximate room temp of 85 degrees. My main concern was the kitten with the opening in its back. Additionally, it has deformed hind legs - they appear to be like rubber with no bone structure. As far as the mamma leaving her babies when I come in the room - she still does that. I hope this post makes more sense! I am on the way to the vet! Thank you. Tracy

It sounds like the kitten may have spina bifida ...... and needs to see a vet ...... some mom cats are more attentive than others.... as long as she is feeding them and batheing them ...... It should be ok .... let us know what the vet says .......

If the kitten has spina bifida (which I agree on the description) and problems with back legs, it will not survive. IMO its best to have it put to sleep now.

Good afternoon everyone. Thank you all for your responses. I just came back from the vet, who advised that the baby had spinal bifida. We decided to send the baby over the rainbow bridge. Before going to sleep, I named the baby "Wish" and gave it lots of love and kisses for its journey. Thanks again. Tracy

Yeah, you definately had to do it. My cat had a kitten last week and she was born the same as yours she also had her bowels and other organs on the outside of her. She died naturally a couple of hours after birth it was so sad because she was as vocal as the others when she was born but soon faded away. I was glad that she passed away naturally. X
