Hey guys. My new little guy is 12 weeks. I just took him to the vet yesterday and he had ringworms. The doctor dewormed him and now the worms are coming out. His poop smells SOO bad. And he is not covering it at all. I would like to ask you all -
1) Do worms make the poop smell bad?
2) What types of problems do worms cause? Bloody poop? Lathargy? General laziness?
3) When the worms leave will his poop smell better? He is eating Special Kitty (dry all day) and half a can of wet Special Kitty once a day.
4) Since he is not covering it, the litter is assumably not the problem?

Yes,worms can make it smell. Yes,it can cause all those symptoms, and maybe it will get better when they are gone. But...the odor could and probably is coming from the Special Kitty brand of food. Have you tried changing to another brand? It makes a big difference sometimes.

The vet probably aid roundworms, right?
"Ringworm" isn't a worm at all, but a fungus infection, and isn't evacuated in poop.

Just a tad bit of information so you keep your files straight and know exactly what to look up

Worms will cause the poop to smell bad. Ringworm is NOT internal - that's more of a skin type of infection and it is contageous.

More then likely its tapeworms or roundworms. Did or does your cats have fleas - if so, its probably tape. Most kittens if strays or outside will have roundworms because they are passed on by mom - so if mom has or had them, the kittens will get them too.

Well it was definitely diagnosed as ROUNDworms...sorry for mistyping it above. He did have fleas but the vet said ROUNDworms...no tape. Should I get him rechecked? The vet said the medicine kills a number of intestinal worms. He is doing better and better smelling
Does he need follow up treatment? I was reading on a vet website that there are 'rounds' of shots/medicine for worms. Anyone know what this is referring to?

As far as the smell goes my bet is placed largely on the dry food. Try another kind or switch to a wet food only diet. You may have to try a few until you find some that agree with his system and generate less stinky poos.

Another thing to consider is that the litter your using is not a good fit for him. Some litters work great for one cat, but not for another.

Cheers!
