Ok, please calm down.

By Over the Counter, what do you mean exactly?

I suspect - though I can't be sure, that he wants to cough up some of the worms (probably in a hair ball).

Is there an emergency vet in a nearby town that you could visit - or even call for advice?

I think it's about 5.47 pm in the pacific coast - if you can't find a vet nearby who will advise you, there are vets or shelters still open on the west coast that probably can.

can you phone the vet at home and ask them to look at your kitty? i know what its like to live in a small town; except my vet is a 3 hour drive away.
good luck and i hope your kitty is ok

I don't think there is an OTC for tapeworms and if there were,I wouldn't use them. They do more harm than good. I'd try calling the vet, too. Especially if he keeps coughing.

The worms shouldn't be an emergency situation. They're gross, yes, and a Monday vet appointment is definitely in order, but your kitten has had them for awhile, I guarantee it.

The coughing is another issue. Is the coughing continuing? Or was it just a one-time thing? Is the kitten active, playing, eating, drinking?

Most definitely don't use an over the counter worm treatment. Before TCS, I used to use such a thing for my ferals till I lost one. The vet told me that the over the counter stuff has piperazine in it and some cats are quite sensitive to it.

I couldn't begin to tell you how guilty I felt about that happening.

I know pumpkin is good to regulate poop in kitties (the pure pumpkin not the filling). I know pumpkin seeds can kill parasites. I wonder if pumpkin can also eliminate parasites? Its only speculation. Your vet will have something that will work very fast.

The OTC stuff can be extremely dangerous and many people have lost pets to it. Definitely only trust the stuff from the vets.
