My cat just had kittens 6 weeks ago today. She's been litter trained for a long while now, never had any problems with accidents or anything after she started using it. But about the last week or so, she's been going on the carpet... she'll go right beside the litter box or in the same room. The only thing I can think of as to why she'd be doing is that is maybe because now that the kittens are running around doing it, she thinks she can, too? I've been trying to train them as well. And the really odd thing is that she still pees in the litterbox, she just keeps doing number 2 outside of it. I asked a friend about it since he had a cat that had kittens a few years ago, and he said he had to put his cat outside because she started doing the same thing and wouldn't stop.

I really don't want to have to put her outside, because then I'd have to get her spayed and I don't like the idea of her being outside, anyway. Too many lose animals around here. Any idea on what I could do? I know if I don't stop this soon, my mom will probably make me get rid of her

Welcome to TCS...first, you do need to have mom spayed...even if you intend to keep her indoors. Cats that are intact are at greater risk for cancers and additionally she could develop pyometra. Also, she will likely go back into heat and want to get outside again and it is best for this to be her only litter. Below is a list of low cost clincs in NC:

Also...her kittens should be placed around 10-12 weeks of age.

Now, regarding her issue with the litterbox, the link below has advice for cats that have litterbox issues:

She probably is not doing it on purpose..but there are several factors that could explain why she is going where she is. My recommendation would be to try the suggestions provided.
