Good morning all,
I REALLY need some advice here. I know that this will make you all as angry as it has made me. I really need to do something about it, but I'm not sure how to go about it. That's where you all come in....so please help.
My bf's brother and his gf live in a trailer park. Not a particularly nice one and there are cats everywhere. One of these cats belongs to them. He's a male who has never even seen a vet. He lives outside and is lucky to find a clean water bowl on his porch. These people should not have pets. They are family, but I DON'T CARE!!! There's NO excuse for letting this situation get to the point it has gotten to. Please excuse me if this becomes a bit lengthly, but I can't help but rant about it. Anyhoo...we were over there last night. There are stray kittens everywhere. But there was one that was so sick, I could'nt stand to even look at it. It broke my heart. This little kitten looked to be about 6 wks old. His eyes were goopy, he had a crusty outline around his nose and was sneezing and weezing like crazy. It was apparent that he was miserable as he continues rubbing his eyes, only to make the goop spread even more. He did'nt run, but would hiss if you tried to approach. Needlesstosay, I would not have handled it anyway. I have 2 indoor cats of my own and would NEVER risk exposing them to anything potentially dangerous.
But that does'nt change the fact that the situation needs tending to. Not seeing it does'nt erase it from my memory and it does'nt make the problem non-existant. Their cat roams the property line scrapping with other (presumably) male cats that try wandering onto "his" property. I'm assuming that all these momma cats are part of his harem. A lot of the kittens I've seen are the same orange tabby type that he is. They said they're making an appointment this weekend to get him neutered....Yeah, I've heard that before. He's still apparantly knocking-up every female in the park. I hate to stereotype here, but what is it about trailer parks and the fact that they always house a ton of un-neutered/spayed cats??? If you can't afford to take care of them....DON'T HAVE THEM!!!!
But even IF they get their cat fixed, what about the damage he has already done?? If there's one kitten that sick, I'm sure there are more. Do I call animal control?? Do I call a shelter?? I thought about a have-a-heart trap but I can't stand the thought of a cat "freaking" out in that thing untill he's hopefully found the next morning??? I don't live close enough to moniter something like that and I have no doubt that these people just don't care enough to even worry about it. I'm really upset about the whole thing and I just can't get my mind off that poor little kitten. I NEED to act on this......what should I do???? I desperately need some suggestions. Please help....I would be so grateful. Thank-you

The only thing that I can suggest it to call a group near them with lots of traps and either get them to come out or borrow the traps yourself and trap them.

This is a game of grey choices - trapping is kinder than the alternative. In a perfect world, of course, the cats wouldn't be bothered by the cages, but sometimes they are. It's still better, and they do get over it.

And you'll need more than one trap - that's why I suggest calling a group.

Best thing is to try to contact some TNR groups in your area:

http://www.alleycat.org/orgs.html

See if they can assist with a mass trapping and spaying/neutering effort.

Be aware however that the need for TNR at the moment far exceeds the number of groups/people who can assist with cats..so they may suggest that you do some trapping on your own. If there is one male that is impregnating the females...I would concentrate on trapping him first. Neuters are usually cheaper than spays and a cat recovers much quicker from a neuter. You can also join this group to learn more about TNR:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/feral_cats/

They have a pretty extensive "files" section with lots of tips. You can certainly ask for advice on the best way to start trapping and see if there is anyone in your area..but I would start trapping on your own. Yes, get this male fixed and then try to find a rescue group who is willing to take on the kittens. Then work on getting the females spayed.
