Hello everyone,
My wife and I have about 20 feral/fixed cats in a fenced in part of our wooded property. Have 5 large enclosed litter boxes which work fairly well. Still have some going in the yard. Is there a deodorant/disinfectant spray I can use for the soil, perhaps using a sprayer and hose? I thank you for any thoughts/advice you may have.
Regards,
Joe D.

You might try simply adding more litter boxes, smaller ones in various other locations. Some of the cats might be doing the "ambush at the litter box" power-trip. Ideally, cats seem to like 2 boxes per cat - often using one for pee and one for poop, so using that as a basis for problem-solving may give you some extra insight on how to solve the problem and still keep all the cats.
Kudos to you & your wife for giving the cats sanctuary and for getting them fixed! We need more people like you on this planet

I have heard of using a childs plastic swimming pool as a litter box for a colony of ferals. That might help. Or maybe some of them don't like litter, and you could put sand in a few boxes to see if that would help.

We buy something called stall dry that is a white powder, to sprinkle on the floor of the horse stalls to keep the smell down. You would have to research it to see if it would be safe for the cats if sprinkled on the ground. But I have a feeling it is the same thing as the tidy cats powder I add to the litter boxes! That might help during the summer.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Unfortunately, five litter boxes for 20 cats just isn't enough. The child's plastic swimming pool is a good idea, but you really need a minimum of 20 boxes for 20 cats, and if you're going with the plastic swimming pool idea, you would need several of these in addition to what you already have. But the boxes really need to be cleaned every day, regardless of how many there are.

Stupid question - but I assume they're all spayed and neutered? If not, please use the link in my signature line to help you find an affordable (if not free) service.

I have no personal experience or recommendation. However, I found this product on the web: PETROTECH ODOR ELIMINATOR

A web search will pull up information about its contents and use.

Good luck.

Hiya Joseph
Welcome to tcs(yeah I know its a bit late
)

If you want to use disinfectants in your yard or on the grass,I would suggest don't
use any disinfectant that turns the water 'cloudy'.
Those disinfectants are toxic to animals and the environment a lot more than other disinfectants.

Hissy has posted about using the kiddy pools and stall dry for litter. I tried stall dry here in my boxes in the house, but prefer chicken feed.

The stall dry sand cost about $13.50 per 50lb. bag and you scoop the feces while just stirring to kill the urine odor.

As others have said. Applause
for you for taking care of these wonderful feral cats. It is a wonderful thing that you are doing.
