This is long..

I've been working at the pet store in my town for a few weeks now, and when I work, I'm there alone. I worked today, and mom came in a few times to keep me company. She called and told me our friend was coming over, and they would come over together. A little while before they got there, an older guy (about 60's) came in, and the minute he started talking, he kind of left a weird impression. We talked for a while, because he was saying that he was interested in buying the building if it's for sale once the pet store is moved across the street. Then he started acting weird and asking more "personal" questions, like where I lived, where I went to school, and if I had a boyfriend, and saying things that implyed that I was going to be his receptionist when he bought the building and made it his "office". Luckily, mom showed up then, and I changed the subject by saying, "Oh, my mom just got here!" and she came in carrying one of her friend's babies. She started crying when she saw the guy, and so he gets right in her face and says "Just shut up!" We were a little upset/annoyed by that, and so he hangs out for a while, and keeps talking. A little later, he tells mom "You have a nice daughter," and she just kind of looked at me like, "Okay?" and I shrugged, because I didn't really know what to say. After that he just starts acting stupid, and asking things like, "Do you have pet supplies here?" I was like, "Is this not a pet store?" Then when he finally decides to leave, we all got a little freaked out, because he stood at the door saying "Bye Holly," over and over until I heard him.. it was so weird. Then I went out to my car for a second, and he kept honking and waving at me in his van.. so I kind of ignored it and went in. After mom, her friend, her daughter, and the babies were in the car and ready to go, her friend called the police and told them there was a really strange older man hanging out with a 17-year old girl (me) in a pet store, and he made her think of a pedophile. A policeman came over a little later while mom ran home for a few minutes, and he asked what was going on. I told him an older man came in and was asking me strange questions, and my mom's friend called the cops because she was a little worried. Mom called before he got there and said his van (we got his plate number before he left) was right down the street at the bar, so I told him his van was there, and he went to see, and talk to him if he was there. We thought he might be waiting there until I got off and would follow my car home. Mom came back, and her friend called and said her and her husband knew someone living in our town, and he was going to go over and literally beat this guy to show him that he was stupid to yell at their baby, and to be hanging around in a store alone with me at work. Mom called her friend who lives right by where I work, and they decided to go over and see if he was there, and they would call me when he left. He didn't notice they were there, and he left a while later, so they told me to watch for him. He never came by, and the guy who owns the bar said he knew him, and he's a real weirdo. We found out that this was the second time someone has called the cops on him this week (he threatened to shoot everyone at our local VFW when he got kicked out), he got kicked out of four places that day, he was seen at the gas station bothering the girls working, like he was with me, he just got out of jail not too long ago, and I think he was the guy who, before being put in jail, brought a machete to a doctor's appointment. Mom and her friend came back, and she brought pepper spray and showed me how to use it if he ever came back, and I didn't feel comfortable. I'm hoping that he won't come back, especially while I'm alone, because after all the things we heard, I'm a little scared of being in there alone now.

Poor thing - that is very frightening.

I have no advice for you, but you are in my thoughts.

I am curious, though - why did your mom start crying when she saw this guy?

Thanks. It makes me feel a little better.

The baby she was holding was the one who started crying.

I think it was the baby who was crying... Babies have good instincts.

I would be creeped out too. This seems to be the week for creepiness. I wanted to go out tonight, but I don't think I am cause there is so much weird stuff going on. I had to work today and there were some super weirdos there too
none as bad as yours though!

Please tell your manager whats going on. You shouldn't be working by yourself. I didn't know anyone still had just one person on a shift anymore, and they shouldn't.

(eta, wow, y'all posted just while I was typing!)

Definately tell your manager/owner. Things like that are dangerous and can be the target of robberies, and bad things like that. I don't mean to scare you but please maybe you should call your manager and tell him/her what happened asap, just so they know what is going on.
And yes, one person on a shift is exteremly dangerous.

Do you have a cell phone? If so, have it handy if he should come in again. That way you can call the police quickly if need be. Also, mention it to your store manager/owner. And be very alert when you are leaving or arriving.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I don't have the owner's number with me, it's on a sheet of paper in the building.. I guess I should write it on something to bring home. I'm going to mention it first thing the next time I see them.

It's okay, I'd probably do the same thing if I was sleepy.

an ice cube in Iowa...
Yes, I would absolutely mention it to him.

How creepy is that? How creepy is this whole week so far? Ack!!!

Well, hopefully plenty of people have been notified about this guy, and people will continue watching out for you.

Don't ever be afraid to bust out the pepper spray. Carry it in your hands, ready to go when you are going from the building, to your car. I would also carry it to the bathroom at work, as you are the only one there...

No offense, but I wouldn't be comfortable with my 17 year-old daughter working in a business ALONE. It just seems to easy for yucky people to take advantage or start some trouble.

I had a creepy guy visit a store where I worked once. He kept saying he was going to buy all top of the line stuff (and I mean a lot of it- like 20 washer/dryer sets or something), asked weird personal questions, then started arguing with me. Apparently he made his rounds on a daily basis to various stores and targeted young women. Luckily my husband worked there as well.

I can't even imagine finding out that information about that guy after he acted so strange around you. I'm glad you called the cops. If he comes again call them immediately and see if someone can escort you out when you leave at night. It's terrible that you even have to worry about this creep. It just isn't right when someone is able to cause such harm.

It's kinda hard to read your post cause there's no paragraphs I guess.

Just be careful.

That's what I'd suggest, too.

Thanks everyone. Mom and I went out to run some errands today, and we drove by the shop on our way to the store, and he was there again. I guess the owner's husband called to talk to him about buying the building, because he was dressed up like a "business man".. pfft.
I'm so glad I wasn't there.. he's creepy. I'm definitely telling them about it when I see them again.

You're not the first to tell me that.. I don't know why, but I have a habit of just typing, and not making paragraphs.

That is so creepy. I'm glad you called the police on him. Hopefully you won't run into him or anyone like him ever again.

its never fun dealing with the public. I used to hate being running a store at night alone, there are some very very strange people that come in, lol and even stranger ones at night.

pepper spray or some mace is a very good idea.
