Just heard from our coordinator that two of our kitties are coming back.
This time it's two Katrina survivors - littermates Johnny and Daisy (both tuxedos) that were rescued in New Orleans after the hurricane. Millie brought them back with her after spending a week in the area working with Alley Cat Allies. Johnny and Daisy were adopted into what we thought was a committed, responsible home. Now, it's the same old story. She's moving and can't take the cats. I'm so tired of hearing this. At least she contacted us, rather than dumping them at a shelter. But, that doesn't excuse her lack of responsibility. After all they've been through, these two deserve better. Please send some vibes/prayers their way.

This is just the latest in what seems to be a string of negative situations involving some of our cats. Maybe we need to be screening potential adopters better. We usually end up with great homes but, after this, I'm really starting to lose faith in people.

You are doing great work.

Even teaching people to surrender their pets rather than destroying or abandoning them is progress from where we were not so long ago.

I know we still have far to go, but please let the knowledge of how far we have come encourage you - we will get there one day.

You remain in my prayers and I will add Johnny and Daisy.

Eileen, I don't think that it is your rescue group's fault at all for this latest turn of events. You could screen until you're blue in the face, but sometimes people just don't have the ability to realize that pets are FAMILY members, not disposable commodities, but most times you can't see that just by talking to them. I mean cripes, i would love to move closer to my job, my friends, my family, the guy I'm seeing, but there is no place on earth that is going to rent to me with a zoo
so I stay where I'm at, because I know that when I took these cats & dogs into my life, it was just for that, life! Unfortunately people like me, you and the others on TCS who believe this are in the minority. I know of a few rescue groups in my area that absolutely refuse to adopt to renters, for just the problem you are having, but that's a lot of homes for homeless animals
what is the lesser of two evils? maybe this is something Millie might want to consider? (the not adopting to renters)

I can see how some rescues might be leary of adopting to renters, but it really hasn't been a problem for us until recently. I'm not a renter now, but was for many years, and would have been pretty upset if someone had refused to adopt to me for that reason. People are either committed to their pets or they're not. I never had a problem finding an apartment that accepted pets, so I don't buy the "I'm moving" excuse.

I found out the woman who adopted the Katrina kitties is currently living in an apartment, but is buying a house. She just talked to our coordinator two weeks ago and didn't mention this and reported that the cats were doing fine. Now she's claiming they're too aggressive. Give me a break. She's just trying to come with any excuse she can to return them.

I rent an apartment and there's no way I would ever move to a place where my babies aren't welcome. If Millie had a "no renters" policy, I wouldn't have my beautiful baby boy, Christopher Cody.

Strong vibes for Johnny and Daisy to find loving, responsible parents who are smart enough to know that they are not disposable.

Thanks, Barbara! I'm glad Christopher Cody has such a wonderful home with you and April Joy.

Sending more prayers for Johnny and Daisy to find their true homes with a wonderful family
Sounds like this woman needed to read the book Cat Confidential by Vicky Hall, or maybe get some adoption counseling. I have worried that some people would adopt Katrina pets simply out of emotion; my sister adopted a couple of cats from her local shelter to help make room for Katrina kitties, and her friend commented that it was not fair - that she should have been given a Katrina cat
as if the other kitties were somehow "less" deserving
Ah, people

Hello,

I for one just moved with my two kitties. It was so hard finding a place that would accept cats!! I was really shocked. But alas I never gave up hope. I was moving in with a friend who would often say "if only we didn't have the cats" and my immediate response was "I won't move without Stanley and Sadie" because I took them into my home for life. I think it is cruel to adopt an animal and then bring it back only a month or so later because you find out you don't really want a pet.

I think poor Sadie fell victim to that as she is never really trusting anymore. She is very skittish. I was told that she was in and out of the SPCA quite a bit before finding my sister. Who after a month her hubby wanted to give her BACK to the SPCA. My sister really didn't want to have to do that to her but there was no changing her hubby's mind. So I took her in. Now her and Stanley are best friends!
