Hi everyone! I'm new to the board. My husband and I just adopted an eight week old male kitten from the humane society 3 days ago. He is very loving and affectionate, and I am so in love with him! Yesterday I noticed one of his eyes is tearing, and appears to be red around the rim. I plan to take him to the vet, but does this sound familiar to anyone? It hasn't affected his mood. He lets me wipe a damp, cool compress around his eye without squirming, so I figure it must feel good to his inflamed eye. Could it be a feline form of pink eye? Please advise this new mom until I can get him to the vet!

Thank you~

Hi Evie3

This is a fairly common problem in kittens and can be caused by several things. Kitty could have the start of a URI (upper respitory infection) He could have a clogged tear duct, or had some sort of bacteria enter his eye- he could of picked this up on his feet and then scratched his face. He could also have an obstruction. Your best bet is to get kitty to the vet, just like you have planned to. My bet would be the start of a URI because he came out of the shelter. Thank you for rescuing him.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I figured it would be something pretty common. I'll let you know what the diagnosis is. I hope the vet can see us tomorrow!

Thanks again, Hissy!

It turns out he has kitty conjunctivitis, and he probably caught it from the shelter. Salve three times a day, and he will be fine. His eye was totally closed with goop this morning, so it's a good thing I could get in to the vet so quickly.
