Avatar size question

K, so I've been trying to get my own picture on my avatar, and I just cannot figure out how to get to a decent size where it doesnt look all messed up.
How do I resize a picture so that it's correctly avatar sized?
I like the one I have now, but I see so many people with thier avatars just a tad bigger than mine, but I cant seem to make mine any bigger without going beyond the required size.
Oh, What to do? What to DO?!

With the current pic you have you could make it this big and still be in regulation size
