Hi, I am a college student in behavioral science. I am taking a cat from some people that have been beating it. It has no shots and likes to bite and attack people. H eis roiughly 2-3 yrs old. The people I will be taking it from had previosly took it from a barn.I will of corse be getting the cats shots and neutering him.
I am willing to do whatever it takes to bring this cat around. I was looking for suggestion.
My only ideas were to slowly get the animal used to more and more human contact and give it treats at the end of good petting sessions. As to when the animal bites I was thinking of putting it in a small kennel for an alotted amount of time every time the animal bites. I will be closely monitoring and logging all activity. Any suggestions would be outstanding thanks.

No Vacancy...One on the way!
i think your on the right track with how to reward good behavior and bad. When mikey is sassy I ignore him and skip out on letting him lay in bed for the night.

Thats good your willing to really work with this cat, ive had a few friends who have had nutty cats and just live with it. no real getting over it.

cats are not always the easiest patients to work with!
esp since they've got those sharp claws

My advice to you is to head on over to the strays and ferrals section and READ READ READ all you can about how others have socialized feral cats and abused cats.

You may be lucky if this cat will even let you near it for the first year or so. You may also need a live trap to take it into the vets office for shots and neutering. This will allow the vet to safely sedate the cat.

Since this cat has been abused, you need to make sure that you do not do anything that is similar to the abuse he's faced. Ex: if they would stuff him in a cat carrier and kick it, he's going to see his cat carrier as a bad thing. (hence why you may need a live trap.)

Thank you for taking in this poor abused baby and helping him. Is there anyway you can report the people who abused him to the police and animal control?

I know that others who have much much more experience will be along to help you.

A couple things off the top of my head.
Soft voice, soft easy walk, no sudden movements and keep some heavy welders gloves on hand. Cat bites can be very dangerous.

I hope you plan to keep wht cat with you after working with it. Animals that have been abused really need stability and if they decide to trust a person that doesn't mean they will trust all people.

Good luck and please be very, very good to this cat!
